I gather Tony Blair has been responsible for over 25,000 new laws whilst in office. That is not accounting for the 2,000 EU laws.
I am truly shocked. One of the most fundamental laws is "Ignorance of the law is no excuse." But, ye gods! who could keep track of all that - even a lawyer?
I like to think I am well clued up in legal terms, but I am becoming despondent by people saying "Er... No Thats been overturned or replaced."
I'm sure that a heathen rabble starting from scratch on a barren island in the Atlantic (Crikey-thats us

) ocean wouldn't need that many laws, what exactly was so wrong with the country to need so many? And he's still at it! They have no sooner finished telling us that our new Anti-Terrorism laws are so great than they start on a whole new raft of 'essential' laws to protect us. I notice with suspicion that none of the proposals are intended to protect us from them.
25,500 new laws! of which I am ignorant of about 20,000 of them. No wonder I am feeling a tad claustrophobic!
Can anyone explain to me what has been achieved by this flood of legislation? Can anyone point to anything that has improved visibly in ten years of dedicated effort to beat us to death with the sheer weight of it?
How exactly, am I better off? OK, I'll rephrase that, who is better off?
