Baby names!!
« on: May 22, 2010, 10:32:52 AM »
A friend tells me he was on a bus in Scallypool yesterday and sat next to a wumman whose baby was called Cadence!!

Anyhoo, he sent me this:

Quote
My husband and I ... have begun the process of actually adopting (an 8-month old girl with special needs). She has a name, which neither my husband or I are fond of, and we would like to change it.
Her current name is : Rainey Marie
We'd like to maybe use Raine as a middle name. Our choices (we'd love suggestions)
Annika Rain nn Annie
Kaya Belle
Ivy Christine
Liv nn Livvie ( we also love Olivia but its so common)
Quinn Rebecca
Saraya Rose nn Sari
Phoebe Kiara
Gabriella Raine nn Bria
Audra Lark
Henry Matteo is the sibling name, and our last name is [removed].

Now I think these names are across the board awful, but it's especially mean to give a tough name to a kid with special needs. I remember reading a story in a magazine that included a girl with severe retardation named Cassiopeia. I can't even imagine her frustration.

That would be Kaye Dense, after her father (if known).

There are countries where it is illegal to give a child a stoopid name. The Birth Registrars in these countries are permitted to refuse to enter such names on the Birth Certificate.

One to think about Dave and Nick? ....... For when you have a spare minute like ... to squeeze it through the legislature.

I would oppose that. Government diktat on child naming? No. It will be CCTV in the house next  evil:

My sister has changed her first and second names three times each. Stupid I am sure, but let her do it!

Read all about it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6939112.stm

Personally I would advocate a "cooling off" time during which people who want to give their kids stupid names should undergo counselling ~ after all giving a child a silly name can amount to cruelty. The kid cannot change it until they are 18.

You can use any name you like as long as you don't commit fraud.

'Snoopy', for example.
