According to the BBC Gordon Brown has "Ordered safety checks on all bridges in Cumbria"

Utter bollox ~ such checks would have been carried out under the County's normal safety procedures agreed with the Environment Agency and forming part of their emergency planning procedures to be undetaken after every flood situation and Brown's instructions would not be required. This is blatant spin to make him look good before an election.
