Simple Explanation Required

The Teenage Hormone Wreck is now dissatisfied with her mobile phone ~ well it is at least a week old ~ and wants one with "Bluetooth". Now I believe that Bluetooth is a wireless system enabling connection, for example, twixt mobile and earpiece/microphone or even mobile to laptop (assuming Laptop is equiped to handle Bluetooth. I further believe that Bluetooth is restricted to a range of about 10metres or so. THW however swears that ALL her friends have this facility and it means that wherever they may be, at whatever distance, they can text one another and share pictures etc FREE OF CHARGE or at least much cheaper than her Pay As You Go mobile will. Now I accept that Pay As You Go is the most expensive per call minute tarrif to be on but I am buggered if I am going to pay out £30 a month to give her unlimited whatevers just to natter to people she spends all day with ~ so Pay As You Go it will be ~ unless she cares to find some gainful employment at weekends and pay the charges herself.
Advice from the techno types (OK Geeks) would be most welcome.
I want to know if I am right about Bluetooth and she has got the wrong end of the stick (which is usual) or if Bluetooth really is free or as near to free as makes no odds as she thinks.

I've just done a little test. Laptop in office (2nd bedroom) with blueetooth active; phone in living room with bluetooth active.

Laptop does search for device... no device found.  ;)   I think the device, in this instance my mobile, needs to be within about 6 foot.

You have not been charged for this service  ;)

It is so. Bluetooth is free. We have put bluetooth adaptors on our PC's (about a £5 each) so we can easily move pics (i.e pics of fucking kitten) from phones to PC etc.

Its named after an old scandinavin king who was called ...wait for it........Bluetooth!  happy088

Thanks troops. You have confirmed the the silly old fool is right and that the teenager is WRONG!

What she really wants but doesn't know it a camera + phone with WAP etc. Bluetooth is, as I thought, incidental.

I feel for you, that lovely age you got the right idea, to say NOOOOO! my 14 yr old neice went last year to hong kong with her dad for a month  and thought she was still in uk, as she managed to give my sis a lovely bill of £500 just for that month! as my sis is trying to put her foot down and pay off the this she got a call off vodaphone to say that they had blocked her daughters phone cos she managed to send 4,000 text messages in a month, and that is supposed to be unlimited, and unlimited is 3,000! as you say she spends all day with these people too...so glad mine are grown up an left the nest now...teens should be sent to boot camp!  noooo:

Tell her you think it is a very good idea to have a phone with this facility as it will also allow you to track wherever she goes, unlike the old phone.  evil:

 rubschin: A plan is forming. I have now identified a suitable 'phone that will do what she wants at a price I am prepared to pay and it is on PAYG. Sending photos will cost her all of her weekly top up allowance to send two pictures. That should bring her down to earth or out to work for the Summer ~ one or the other. eveilgrin:

Early Bluetooth had a range of about 10 metres - nowadays it is nearer 30 metres.

Either way, you still have to a relatively short distance twixt sending and receiving device. Bluetooth also makes you grow extra nasal hair. And a hunchback. Or am I getting confused with Cornwall again?
