Oh it gets worse, out of curiosity I hopped on to the uk.gov website to see what the criteria are for becoming a Magistrate..

Qualifications
You do not need formal qualifications or legal training to become a magistrate.

You will get full training for the role, and a legal adviser in court will help you with questions about the law.

So you don't need legal qualifications or experience in order to become a magistrate. Never mind, I'm sure there is a long and comprehensive training period before you start your duties..

Training to be a magistrate
In the first 2 years, you will have about 10 days of training. This will include things like online learning modules, time with your mentor and meetings with stakeholders across the criminal justice system.

After the first 2 years, you will have about 1 or 2 days of training every year.

So what you are saying David, is that the legal system will only be saved by scrapping jury trials and having a probably unqualified and poorly trained magistrate decide trials instead. Helped by an advisor that we have no guarantee has a legal qualification themselves.
