Title: The incredible shrinking plant
Post by: Nick on June 27, 2011, 04:52:51 PM
Back in March I bought a load of plants for my garden. Broccoli doing fine, herbs AOK, tomatoes coming along nicely, flowers surviving, peppers growing.

One lazy plant has just sat there for months and done NOTHING. Now it is getting SHORTER!!

Seriously ~ what is the plant (other than a plant and shrinking)?

And I shall brain the first one that suggests a shrinking violet!

I was thinking bay tree, but the leaves look a bit too big. It could also be a rubber plant, but only an idiot would plant a rubber plant outside in Nottingham  whistle:

The Royal Horticultural Society's Encyclopaedia of Plants and Flowers does not have it listed in the index of 8,000 garden plants. "Culpeper's Herbal" fails to mention it and Google does not have a single listing under that spelling either.

Sorry can't help.

They could have spelt it right - Cytisus battandieri. ... Common Name: Pineapple broom. Genus: Cytisus Species: battandieri.
The flowers look very much like mullien, and give off a pineappple scent

Ages since I listened to Gardeners Question Time. I must go back to listening to it. As well as being informative, I always enjoyed the banter that went on

Ah-Ha! Gorrit in the book now!

Also known as "Moroccan Broom"
"Semi evergreen, open shrub. Leaves have 3 silvery leaflets. Pineapple-scented yellow flowers appear in summer"
Grows to 20 ft high and 20 ft wide  eeek:

Oh dear! A bad choice for a small garden.  noooo:

I like this bit ~ very apt.  ;)

Quote
Poisonous if eaten/irritating sap; Prone to slug and snail attack.

Instead of taking the p*ss I should add that if it is to grow as described then having come from a pot and been planted out it is probably "shrinking" as it is growing vigorously, beneath the soil, a mahoosive root system before it shoots up and out into a hooge tree!
