Title: Shrinking wine boxes
Post by: Uncle Mort on June 10, 2011, 01:27:18 PM
I have noticed that Sainsburys no longer sell wine in 3 litre boxes but have changed to 2.25 litres. I have enquired but the lady at the information desk didn't have an answer. She said that she would investigate and ring me but somehow I doubt that.

Anyone know anything about this?

(I note that the price has not gone down proportionally)

Mars Bars have also shrunk and a packet of fags @£5.20 now only contains 19 ciggies rather than 20!
We are being robbed by stealth!  cussing:

PS In Holland and France ciggies are sold in 20s or 25s and wine boxes still hold 3 ltrs as I discovered only a week or so ago. Those sold on Sea France Ferries also come in the original sizes.

On the subject of UK v The Rest of Europe ~ pump prices for petrol and diesel looked the same varying between 129.9 to 135.9 per litre until I realised that ours are in pounds and pence and theirs are in Euros.
As I paid 83 pence for each of my Euros ..... well you work it out.

TBH I don't drink much at all and never buy baccy or ciggies in the UK .... My supplies are "imported" by Lil Bruv ~ the outer packaging does smell a bit "meaty" though. whistle:

Years ago there used to be a thing called the "Mars Bar" index which was reckoned to be the most accurate index of "Futures" pricing ever. Mars used to increase and decrease the size of the Bar according to the price paid on the world markets for the various ingredients rather than reflect the price changes in their retail price. The "Mars Bar Index" was devised by some researchers at one of the Universities (Oxford comes to mind) who spent several years measuring and weighing the Bars and proved that it was an accurate reflection of the whole retail prices index. So rather than go through the rigmarole of comparing baskets of shopping they claimed that one simply needed to buy and weigh a Mars Bar each month.

I suspect the same principle is at work in Sainsbugs...... They also seem to me to be hoping that customers will not notice that they are maintaining profits, well probably increasing them, by selling a smaller quantity for much the same price as the previous.
No doubt if pressed they would claim to be supporting Government initiatives to reduce "Binge Drinking" as they have effectively increased the price which is exactly what the politicians have been saying they should do ~ despite the many cheap  bars within the Palace of Westminster where of course, it being Crown Property, normal taxes and duties on alcohol and tobacco do not apply.

Memo to self: Continue with your policy of buying alcohol and fags abroad.
