Title: Collective Nouns
Post by: Miss Demeanour on May 24, 2011, 12:34:09 PM
Having just had a discussion around what the collective noun would be for a group of velociraptors   rubschin: ...it leads me on to wonder why we have so many collective nouns . When was the last time you referred to a murder of crows , or a drove of cattle or a brace of ducks.

Herd, pack , school , flight , litter etc should cover most things surely  rubschin:

By the way we decided the collective noun for velociraptors should be a viciousness ...I like that. Don't know why we were discussing this when I was eating lunch tho  redface:

The Welsh don't seem to do collective nouns ~ they just say "The Sheep" or "The Cows" never the flock or the herd. Maybe in their own language they do have collective nouns but when speaking English they don't seem to bother.

I'm sure Nick will know the reasons for different collective nouns for each group but personally I like 'em as they are so descriptive.

Why a "Barrel of Laughs"? ~ I dunno but it amuses me and I know exactly what it means.

Inventing new ones is always good for passing away a lunch break. My favourite from a similar conversation years ago was and still is "A Whip-round of Masochists"

Which  one of your careers was this from ?  rubschin:

I have had no real career ~ just a lot of different jobs, usually unconnected with each other but utilising what skills I possess (mainly the gift of the gab) and always chasing an extra couple of quid at the end of the month. Reason for that was that my Father decreed that University wasn't for "the likes of us" so I ended up going to work to be able to afford to go back to work the following day. RAF was my intended career but H Wilson and his cutbacks ended that.

The conversation referred to was between a group of salesmen and managers over a pre -Christmas get together/pub lunch in the Rugby Tavern in Holborn........ Quite how I can remember that but not be able to recall what I had for dinner last night I don't know..... Old age I assume.
