Title: Superstitions
Post by: Just One More on May 13, 2011, 06:07:11 AM
Sooooo, it's Friday the 13th and whatever minor mishap occurs, somebody is bound to say, "it's Friday the 13th". Off the top of my head the only one I do/mention is "touch wood", but that's more a jokey thing than I must do it or the inevitable ill happen

Any superstions you have?

Seriously though ...I always look for another Magpie when I see just one  redface: . I don't salute , or say good morning or spit or  anything though  noooo:

On the whole I am not superstitious though .

My mum was a bloody nutter about such things. Times when I was a kid and I came home, bought a new pair of shoes and put them on the kitchen table to show her. She would swoop in there and swipe the things off the table onto the floor saying that new shoes were never to be put on a table.

We were also never allowed to cross on the stairs   Shrugs:

Blue and green were never to be seen  whacky115

The list was endless  lol:

My Mum was the same... apparently we'd have ginger headed twins if we crossed on the stairs... t always seemed most unlikely...  noooo:

She'd turn her money over at the sight of a new moon too - never brought her anything tho...  sad24:

Christine Whatsit on TV was on about the magpies this morning and the spitting thing. None of the others had heard of the spitting thing so she said, "text in and tell me if you spit".... much stifled laughter on the sofa in the studio, and not so stifled at JOM Towers  lol:

I had a childhood of constant old wives tales and superstitions from all corners of the family. There was much clutching of collars if we saw an ambulance. The collar could only be released when we subsequently saw a four legged animal. Magpies had to be greeted with a polite "Good morning Mr Magpie", money was turned over on the full moon, new shoes were never put on a table, wood was always touched, an itchy right palm meant you were going to part with money but an itchy left palm meant you would receive money, rain on St Swithin's Day meant a certain 40 days of washing being dried indoors, Black cats crossing our path brought good luck. Frankly I could go on for pages but fortunately I have never been superstitious ~ touch wood!

Ooooo! I forgot.

When pouring tea if the tea in the cup bubbled it was bad luck but if the bubbles went right round the cup and joined up then you were in line for a fortune.  noooo:

Father always sealed his Pools Coupon in an envelope which he then rubbed on the arse of his trousers three times before putting it in the post box.
