Title: The Census ~ 2011
Post by: Pastis on February 21, 2011, 01:08:43 PM
Surely, since 2001, they have enough information on each one of us to compile a census without going to all the bother, expense etc of yet another one? After all who really wants to know how many Jedi Knights there are in the UK?
A waste of time and money   noooo:

Not to future students of genealogy it isn't  evil:

With so few people having their children baptised and many couples not bothering to get married these days there are few other records that are accessible to anyone trying to track a family tree. The census only started in 1841 and has been taken every ten years since in most countries. To get back beyond 1841 one has to trawl parish records as these are the only reliable source of Births, Marriages and Deaths (Registration, by the State, of these events only became compulsory in 1838) Given the number of parishes there were (and still are) this is a difficult undertaking without the invaluable information of family's locations, birthplaces, ages and relationships that the census records contain. It has taken me some 15 years to get back to the 1540's on both my Mother's and my Father's side of the tree via Parish Records, many of which are still held in the churches/chapels etc. The bit from me back to 1841 was the work of a few days on the internet. The rest of the time was entirely reliant on parish records, gravestones and manorial rolls.

OK that may be a selfish reason on my part but Nectar Card records (and similar) would not be of much use to anyone tracing their family tho' if the records of these and their use are kept they may be useful to social historians.

Well my form has arrived  eveilgrin:

I know opinion is sharply divided about this. I have used census data myself for werk purposes (and I buy the genealogy argument) but I am also increasingly aware of the dangers of  databases and distrust the Government more and more by the day. I shall fill the form in (unlike many of the Poles and RUssians who seem to live in nearby flats) but will put in some tactical inaccuracies (which many will do by mistake or through stupidity).

Anyone have any good sub v ersive ideas (yes, yes, Jedi and stuff  ::))?

Leg-Iron had some good stuff on it a while back...

It all relates to The Day doesn't it...?

So if your bedroom was turned into a office on The Day then you have no bedrooms, that sort of thing... all perfectly legal...

Local authorities grants allocation from central government is also heavily based on these stats which is why they invest so much resource in trying to ensure they get completed forms.

Just looked at the first question.

Please define "usually" as in "Who usually lives here?"

Now where do my children usually live?

Sunday and Monday night they're at their mum's. Other nights here. After school Tuesdays through to Friday they go to Mum then here. Saturday and half of Sunday here. I shall have to consult with the ex.   rubschin:

Welsh Language Act!

Teaching in Wales or any Government Job (even local gov) Police, Ambulance, Nursing etc requires that the employee is bi-lingual by the year 2020 .... the original target was 2012 but it "slipped".... anywhoo they are trying to find out just how many people can actually speak it as the WAG want money to spend on teaching everyone the bloody lingo and the answers to that question will give a measure of just how much it is likely to cost.

Fear not Pastis .... it will never happen!

The more No answers the better eveilgrin: eveilgrin:

Filled my form in some time ago on line.

1st shitty reminder letter received today stating I am a non response , need to fill in or I will be hunted down and killed kinda thing  ::). So ring up the call centre , go through sixty thousand options , none of which allow you to speak to an actchewal personage until you stick with it.

Gonk comes on the phone and then checks records...oh yes we have received your details , just ignore our letters he says , we have some data matching issues

How inspiring  noooo: noooo: noooo:

Fvck me! They're quick off the mark. If completed on Sunday night/Monday morning (it is supposed to be an accurate record of who spent the night at your house) and you had posted it on Monday the Royal Mail would never have got it to them in time for them to start chasing and to get a letter back to you by today.

So their issue is that they have sent the wrong letter to those who responded early.

Gives you little faith in any conclusions and forecasts they may make based on the census answers.

They shouldn't start chasing anybody until 6th April. And when it is all finished someone else will knock on your door- A survey about the census, apparently
