Why does the shadow on the Moon not tally with the 'moon phase' though?
It looks a bit random.

The shadow and phase do correspond with each other. Run it slowly and imagine you're on the point on the Earth directly below the Moon looking up. The phase shown is what you would see. You only see the portion of the Moon's surface that is lit from your viewpoint even though half the Moon is always lit by the Sun.

But on the two full moon sections here, the little moon on the left is shadowed but the one on the right isn't?

It looks like you've taken images at full moon in May and June 2011. I've run the same but my little moon stayed in half shadow.   confused:
