Title: Replacement parts
Post by: Pastis on November 25, 2010, 11:39:42 AM
Ok, the nice man from the breakdown crew has been and 'sorted' the problem ... the manifold heat shield had become corroded and was messing with the alternator wiring or summat.
I've identified the replacement shield but of course it's out of stock with no delivery date  ::)

Whaddya do then?  Growler will I'm sure, advise  angel1

So far it's unavailable; all three places I've tried say the same thing, they've got people waiting but no production is due  cry:

Your car interior closely resembles that of the car belonging to SWWLTBO.

Point taken. It's a 10 year old with low mileage (34K) and bits of it are beginning to go but TBH it's not worth getting rid of. The manifold heat shield was in a right old state and although the RAC man said it should be replaced there's quite a few opinions on various Rover/MG fora that say it's not necessary.
I'll ask the wise guys up the road shortly because it's due an MOT and a service. The last time their (Polish) electrician fixed the heater switch because no parts were available ~ good to find someone with some nouse and a soldering iron  ;D

Parts which are available and therefore render such temporary repairs irrelevant...  ;)

Seems odd that I can buy every single part for a 40 y/o Mini and Pasty can't get a bit for his (relatively) recent Rover...  rubschin:

In fact I suspect that SWWLTBO is just waiting for the men with a black van to collect me in a zipped bag.

The friendly mechanic at Honest Dave's Motors looked under the bonnet yesterday. He smiled and said:

"To be honest, (he always says that ~ that's why we call him Honest Dave), to be honest the main thing that heat shield does is to protect anyone when they're working on the motor when it's been running and hot. You could get a nasty burn off of that manifold.
Yer water pipes are well clear of it but keep an eye on them; if yer find a replacement shield, buy it and we'll fit it but don't worry."

Well, it's either thumbs up or famous last words ~ time will tell  razz:

'Tis very true; it's well worth engaging with the folk that live and work around you ~ some I find are those that stay a while and move on but there are others whose lives are firmly rooted locally and they make the place richer, be they wealthy or poor.
