Title: Sad family photos
Post by: Nick on October 27, 2010, 01:25:48 PM
My sis is the custodian (also thief) of family pics. She gave me a bunch today of long dead rellies, all of whom I knew and loved. They speak of a different era.

Here is one of my mum and dad on the day they got engaged:

Happiness and hope. The year? 1938 and somewhere on the East Coast. Both of them 19 years old. sad24:

What followed? Well, the war (remember those diaries), poverty, death (him cancer at 66, her a stroke at 80 after years in a wheelchair. sad24:

Oddly enough my brother is picking up a load of old photos from our mum this very afternoon. We plan to scan them all and pass them around the family.

Here's one I already have. Also taken in 1938 of my mum.

I have several the most poignant being those of my elder brother who died in an accident when we were children. Thanks to the box brownie he took with him on that school trip I have a couple of him enjoying his last days. They're boxed up together with a couple of postcards he sent and his diary.  sad24:
For that, photography is a miracle of reminiscence. My Mum had a brother who lied about his age, joined up and was killed on the Somme; no photographic record exists of him.

On a lighter note, I have some photos of a young Mr P that are really sad fashion statements  redface:    lol:

How are our ancestors going to feel when we, or more particularly the next generation (my kids for example) have no photographs because they are all digital and the discs/memory cards etc have gone the way off all things electronic? We wouldn't have the Domesday Book if it had been a digital record but because it was hand written on paper the original still exists a 1000 years later.
Anyone here still able to view their Betamax recordings of their weddings?

Make sure you print copies of your good photographs onto proper photographic quality paper and they might survive ... Oh and put the names, dates and places on the back. It is so frustrating to have photographs that were in my parent's papers and now they are dead I have no idea who some of the people are.

Some good points Snoopy.

My brother and I have been going through my mum's photos. There's one of a group of First World war soldiers. On the back is written "Dad 1914" but which soldier is he?  Banghead

You should ask Miss C or Miss D...I'm sure they're experts at fondling finding the family jewels
