It is a ship plotter... I can watch ships sailing past me owse, click on this thing and it tells you all about them...
And you can zoom out and look at any ship anywhere in the world... apart from places where they have piracy like...

They have similar for The Solent, I believe it crashed last week due to the numbers using it when the Queen Elizabeth came in to be launched by the Queen. See here (http://www.ais-live.co.uk/aismap/AIS%20Maps/sailandpleasure.html)

And to think we only used to have the "Shipping Movements" in the Southern Evening Echo each night and would all go to Weston Shore to watch the bigger liners come and go. Same thing I 'spose, just more technical.

Then she prolly knows my cousin who also worked for Lloyds Register, travelling the world assessing ships in build for insurance and registration purposes.

Oh he was there for years. Spent a lot of time in Korea when they were building most of the world's shipping. Lives in Witham, Essex.

The company I work for earns it's money on knowing where ships are, where they're going and what cargos they can carry. We pay thousands of pounds p.a. for their data.
One of my first jobs when I started was to send on crew mail to where the ship was due next. We acted as agents for a couple of Japanese shipowners. No computers or e-mail, mainly corresponded by telex.
