What a waste of time, effort and energy.
I refuse to allow automatic updates, for reasons we have discussed and mostly agreed on here in the past, but I do allow the notification of available updates, allowing me to choose which updates I wish to install.
Over recent months I have been constantly reminded (by constantly read several times daily) that I need to install a most "important" update in the form of a service pack to Windows XP. I have ignored this as I use Vista. In the past month I have also received many reminders that I need to install a service pack (1) to Vista. I said yes to that as it seemed to me to be a prudent move to install a service pack and iron out any bugs they had corrected. BUT it would not install. Always refuses to install telling me that it is "not compatible".
Yesterday they offered me Service Pack 2 for Vista. ~ Good plan I thought. So I clicked on install.
Banghead Naturally it will not install .... and the reason? because I do not have component parts of Service Pack 1 installed to enable Service Pack 2 to install.
Words with Microsoft via the telephone have been spoken. The geek was incredulous that there should be any difficulty ..... in fact he went so far as to suggest that perhaps I didn't know what I was doing. How much training does one need to click on "Install"?
Perhaps in revenge for my calling him a gormless twat my PC then dropped its internet connection giving me an error message saying that my "Ethernet Driver had ceased to function and had to be reinstalled".
Bollox! angry041: ~ I turned the damned thing off, waited 30 seconds and switched it back on .... It works again.

I cannot even begin to tell you the trouble I am having with service pack 2 install.
None of my DVD drives now work as it has fecked them cry:
I have tried to install it several times now and the same thing happened ..it says it has done it and is shutting down to reboot. Only never shuts down and you have to manually turn it off. It then starts off with an string on numbery / errory things and you have to shut it off again
You start it for a 3rd time and you have to go into system recovery

The best method is to download the whole SP and then install it
Also get the latest SP, don't bother trying to go step by step.

I am sure it is stupid of me but when M/Soft put a sign on my screen saying "Download Service Pack 2 for Vista now and be sure you are fully up to date and protected" and I click on "Download" I tend to assume that what they are offering is indeed SP2 and not bits of it.
But thanks anyway for the advice ~ I shall be sure to pass it on to the cretin I was speaking to yesterday.

If you search MS site for Vista SP you should be able to get to the downloadable file. This is the complete thing.
The on-line update downloads a load of stuff and then tries to install with more stuff to download - this often fails for some reason, I had a problem with XP recently and got round by getting the complete SP.
MS used to allow SPs to be distributed on CDs with mags like PCPro, but for some reason they stopped doing it.

I'll look and let you know happy088

noooo:
As suggested I tried to install SP1 only to be told that I already had SP1
So I tried to install SP2 by the route you suggested.
It said I was lacking a vital component.
MSoft site then offered another "fix" download to install the missing file.
That downloaded but refused to install.
Frankly I don't have enough life left to bugger about with it.
So thanks for the suggestions and help but please NO MORE. The fecking machine can stay as it is until it gives up completely when I shall buy another.
Alternatively I may get a man in but usually it is cheaper to buy another PC
