Recently I have been talking to a few of these people about their knowledge or lack of when it comes to things IT.
Am staring to think that there may be a little opening here for me to use my skills in an educational way rather than just the break/fix route.
Anybody got any thoughts/comments about this?

The chap who does my IT came to my attention by putting a flyer through the letter box. He prints a load off and then whens he's quiet he targets an area and letterboxes every house

Sounds like a good idea, but are you a tolerant teacher?
I only know the basics but teaching Mrs DS (#3) how to forward an e-mail every other day can be rather wearing, as is explaining that the PC is not conspiring to misplace or move things to spite her.
Why is it always so tricky to get a double height taskbar from being vertical at the side to single height and horizontal at the bottom, when she can do the reverse so easily and regularly?

I am very patient, comes from years of experience working with complete morons, usually managers/directors. Done loads of remote support which is the most difficult kind.
In the last couple of weeks I visited a friend of Mrs Tel to sort out a few laptop probs - her son who has some kind of problem (no idea what) pounced on me and we had a long session ripping music for his ipod and generally internet stuff - firend remarked on how patient I was.
It's not something I think about, it's just become part of my working nature.
Also going fishing for many years helps with patience.

Here is an idea.... whistle:
Gran-o-magnet... (TM Barman & Cyprusgrump 2010)
Get some fridge magnets made with your details and number on them...
PC repairs, upgrades, instant fix, software explanations... I SAID SOFTWARE EXPLANATIONS DEAR, OKAY?.... lol:
Give them away to old people, perhaps the local Derby & Joan (do they still do that?)
When they dribble into their mouse and it stops working they'll have an instantly available number to call...
I take 63%.... whistle:
-
Do it with a mouse-mat instead.... and I'm only asking 62%
-
Do it with a mouse-mat instead.... and I'm only asking 62%
See, they'd lose the mouse mat under piles of shite, incontinence pads and old magazines.... noooo:
They have to go to the fridge 'cos they keep their pills there....
61?%.... whistle:
-
Nah, they'd never remember the pills are there, they've got AAADD (http://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/index.php?topic=2657.msg52814#msg52814) remember whistle:
Still 62%

The downside of course, is that the potental female customers could well be the rather predatory, widows.
They are not to be dismissed lightly as an occupational hazard.

CRB checking - anyone been thru this?
Seems that if you are self-employeed you can't ask for it.
Might be useful to have, particularly as my SIL is now lamenting the state of her daughters IT education, 4 different teachers in 6 months, so no continuity and she (and her fellow classmates) are falling behind. She thinks that some parents may be looking for extra tuition to bring them back on track.
-
For bizarre reasons it has to go via employer or other authorities. You might try
http://www.isa-gov.org.uk/ (http://www.isa-gov.org.uk/)
-
Most local councils now have a register of "approved" tradesmen ~ in many areas this includes a check so that users may feel safe that the tradesman they select from the list has been vetted to work with vulnerable adults and/or children but if you want to go down the tutoring route there is NO legal requirement to be CRB checked. You must, of course, act in accordance with the "Protection of Children" Acts.
We ran a tutoring company for a number of years when we first moved here. We stopped because of the CRB checks costing so much. As we employed the tutors we had to have them CRB checked BUT an individual tutor does not need to get clearance. That is up to the individual parents. Wife still does tutoring but as she also works in the public sector she has been CRB checked but she has no proof of that should anyone ask to see it. Nobody who has placed their child with a tutor via our business or with Mrs S#2 has ever asked to see any evidence of the checks having been done. Clear proof, to my mind, that it is another piece of worthless red-tape to raise revenue for a bankrupt government.
