Title: Another one for the teccies
Post by: The Moan Ranger on November 23, 2009, 10:21:04 AM
For some unknown reason, my wireless seems to have stopped working - it was fine last night.

It normally connects automatically, but refused to do so this morning. When I try to connect manually it says "wireless network security key is incorrect", but it isn't.

Any ideas?

I've tried the usual turning off/unplugging/resetting stuff to no avail.

When it happened to me I tried all the reset, re-key and restore options to no avail so I took the laptop to McDonalds and found that I could connect to their Free Wifi so determined that it was not my wireless card. On returning home still no connection to my house wifi system so I reset the router which gave me a new key code. Fed that into the laptop and it worked. Then I had to reset the other 4 laptops in the house.

When  I had a subsequent failure to connect what I discovered was that while I was happily keying in my code and the machine was saying "sod off"  although I was using the right code I had not noticed that the machine had defaulted to WPA whereas the code was WEP. This seems to be a more common problem than one would think. For reasons known only to the Gods the laptops simply take it upon themselves to change that little setting from time to time, All the laptops here have done it at different times, Some are M/soft and some Linux. Only the THW's Macbook has not done it so far.

SORRY TO BUTT IN ~ I KNOW I AM NOT A TECCIE ~ HOPE MY REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE IS OF HELP

Thanks Snoops, but it still didn't work. So I have re-installed it and it works now, but doubtless it will screw up Mrs TMRBB's...

Possibly a stupid question but seeing as the last time I had a windows update it reset a load of my account settings back to defaults could yours have been caused by something similar?
