Title: Hero or Victim of Darwinism?

So a policeman, of whom nobody but his family and friends would have heard had it not been for the manner of his death is called a hero.
What do we call the idiot who set off in a canoe on a flood swollen river and drowned?

Sorry but the policeman was just doing his job .... he is no hero. He was unfortunate but would be with us today had he selected somewhere else to stand to direct traffic. Only a fool stands on a dangerous bridge to redirect traffic. He could have stood on the approach to the bridge and done the job just as well.A poor decision caused his demise as did the choice made by the canoeist. Neither are heroes, both made lousy decisions ~ Darwin is proved right again.

I agree on him not being a hero, but I'll hold judgement on him being a fool for standing where he was until the full circumstances of the event are known.  This was a wide span bridge and he may have moved forward to try and prevent somebody crossing the bridge

Meanwhile, more coppers needed to save people from themselves

Calva Bridge in Workington has been closed since to traffic since it was damaged by floodwater.
However, three vehicles were spotted driving across it on Thursday, after occupants removed temporary barriers
