Two things stood out for me watching it again; soundtracking The Stranglers on every episode, brilliant, and including the blunt critique from the French women lol:

Yeah...I dont think today's tv chefs would have left that in.
I like Rick Stein too, but it looks to me as if his programmes have already been done by Floyd. Same director if I'm not mistaken.

A great 45 minutes. It's been a long time since I'd watched any of his stuff, I'd forgotten how good he was, great entertainment

Very much so ~ same director indeed ~ Floyd once accused him of creating Stein to be the new Floyd. They didn't speak for many years after that. The episode when Floyd is cooking with Stein is a cracker of embarrassment for Stein who frankly hasn't a clue what is going on.
Hugh Fearnley Whatsit can take some stick mind. Like Floyd he didn't train to be a chef or a cook but rather fell into it out of a desire to create good food. The only other one I can think of who doesn't get all "Cheffy" if people don't like his cooking is AWT.
