New world 800m champion Caster Semenya has been asked to take a gender test, according to athletics' governing body.
The International Association of Athletics Federations says it demanded the test three weeks ago amid fears she should not be able to run as a woman.
IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said the "extremely complex, difficult" test results were not due for several weeks.
The South African athletics federation insists it is "completely sure" that Semenya, 18, is a female
But resolving whether a person is male or female is not a simple matter of physical examination - the method originally used by the International Olympic Committee when mandatory gender testing was introduced in 1968 before being phased out on ethical and scientific grounds 10 years ago.
There are numerous "intersex" conditions that do not affect external genital appearance.
If Semenya is found to have an abnormality, the issue will be whether it offers her an unfair advantage. If so, hormone treatment or surgery may be necessary.
There is also a precedent for stripping an athlete of a medal, as was the case with Indian runner Santhi Soundarajan, who lost her 800m silver medal after failing a gender test at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.
The fact that Soundarajan later attempted suicide underlines the sensitivities involved, and Davies said Semenya's test results would remain confidential .
How can her results remain confidential.... if after the end of all this she maintains her medal or loses that surely will be conclusive rubschin:
How horrible this must all be for her noooo:
-
I do have my suspicions about 'her' gender, 'she' does has a certain masculine quality about 'her'. rubschin:
-
Certainly has a very deep voice. rubschin:
-
How can it be an "extremely complex, difficult" test ?
It would take me about three seconds.
Probably means the doctors are too slow to catch her.
-
I don't think it's just a physical looky looky thing DS - they are talking about chromosome testing and stuff eeek:

OIC
Science and stuff noooo:
So if the test says she should have meat and two veg but she doesn't, do they flip a coin?
-
According to the IAAF rule book, the medical delegate makes the decision on gender.
In this case the tests will take weeks. And there will be a panel of experts: an endocrinologist, a gynaecologist, an internal medicine expert, a psychologist and a gender expert who will debate the issue of Caster Semenya.
Great - a debate will decide her gender noooo:
-
It all comes down to the combination of chromosomes apparently
-
I always thought females would have evolved to run faster.
The need to escape from the likes of Snoopy, combined with no tackle to impede the leg movement should have made them much quicker.
-
What about the lady bumps...they impede everything whistle:
-
What does the team think?
"She" has a deep male voice, some facial hair (apparently) and is built like a man.

IMHO that is a bloke despite the absence of a "lunchpack"!

But then Fatima Whitbred was never very feminine.....sometimes you have to sacrifice things for the sake of your art whistle:

Without me meat and two veg I don't have an art

Not true at all you can, errrr.... um.... rubschin: . Probably better you keep hold of them.
Oh, I see you are. ;)

That's what I thought. It isn't just the deep voice but the whole manner is one of being a young and very uppity black youth
-
Yup. What prompted this enquiry in the first place anyway?
-
I gather it has been going on for some weeks and is not a result of the recent wins in Berlin. Other competitors had made comments in previous meetings and the ruling body had already started their enquiry. The comments would seem to be similar to those we have made. In particular "she" just isn't built right for a girl ~ I think it is generally accepted that she has the requisite missing meat and veg but the voice, the build, the manner, the look of "her", the facial hair etc have all made many suspect that, whether she knows it or not, she ain't 100% female.
-
rubschin: Could be a post op TV? shocked003
-
All her family swear she has always been a girl ~ which means they believe she has the required "front bottom" and always has had. This includes mother, aunts, cousins etc. It does not explain why, when looking at photographs of her female relatives she is head and shoulders above them and is built more like a man than any of them. Her hips are too narrow for a woman, her muscles are all wrong when compared to other female athletes, her facial expressions are too "cocky" for a girl.

TBH No ~ and she was the only one in the final I wouldn't have ~ assuming I could have caught up with any of them of course. confused:
Beagles are built for stamina not speed.

Tests have revealed Caster Semenya's testosterone level to be three times higher than those normally expected in a female sample, BBC Sport understands.

'Nuff said ~ Bleddy South Africans should have picked this up long ago but they were so determined to win they just claimed no dick means it must be a she. Not good enough but they will be shouting foul for ever more now. I notice they have already claimed it is only because she is bleck tunble:
Dunno 'bout you lot but I am bored with them trotting this out every time they don't get their own way. They are black because the sun is hot where they come from and fairer skins did not survive ~ end of story. That they have f*cked up their country is not my fault.
