Title: Fruit flies like a banana
Post by: Snoopy on June 08, 2009, 05:28:11 PM
SWWLTBO is in the habit of buying these "fresh and still growing" salad leaves and herbs in pots with which she adorns the kitchen window ledges. They invariably die before she remembers to use them. The latest batch, purchased last week, have given rise to squadrons of small black flies, slightly larger than your average fruit fly but in all other ways very similar. Looking at the label I see that the culprit seems to be parsley from Spain. I wonder what dread insect she has unwittingly let loose on North Wales?

Our mosquitoes are famously vicious and can bite even through jeans. All the local chemists carry vast stocks of anti-histamines  evil:

If fruit flies like a banana does that mean that time flies like an arrow? whistle:

Ahhh...

'Time flies' metaphorically implys that time goes quickly, an arrow practically flies through the air, and the species fruit flies like to eat bananas. The play is on the use of the word 'flies' in it's different uses. But put together, the two sentences separated by a comma, give the sentence a different meaning, because our brains see the meaning of the first clause of the sentence in the second clause, we see the sentence as meaning that time flies in the same manner as an arrow flies through the air (possibly direct and piercing), and fruit e.g. generic term for apples, pears, oranges fly through the air in the same way as a banana would fly through the air (possibly like a boomerang due to its shape).
