Title: Powerpoint presentations
Post by: Miss Demeanour on June 03, 2009, 12:34:26 PM
Why is any presentation given these days not complete without a Powerpoint parade of slides that you will have read out to you whilst you sit caught in the tractor beam of boredom .

It doesn't matter how many whizzy bang features you put into it ...they will still be as dull as ditch water.

You can try and bamboozle me with strobe lighting effects, the sounds of bullets each time you click or hypnotise me with concentric circles  - the outcome will all be the same  sleep021

I was once billed as "going to give a Powerful presentation"  eeek:

It's a slide show and that's it. If the piccies aren't interesting then why bother?

Other than "virtual" presentations we don't bother anymore really. People tend to fall asleep and in my experience people who use them are lazy and sloppy presenters who don't really engage with their audience. They tend to just read off the slides. Print them out in a book and save us all the bloody trouble!

I use it too but simply as a slide show. The piccies serve to illustrate the point I'm making. I went to a presentation a few weeks ago where the guy was simply reading out what was on the slide... and on the hand out  noooo:
Fortunately we'd taken  our drinks through so my accomplice and I carried on supping and whispering derogatory comments  eveilgrin:

That is exactly what I meant! Slides are for extra information, bullet points or prompts!

We have a new senior manager that's like a breath of fresh air. We'd sat through about four mind numbing presentations by other managers and then he did his. Slide 1 came on, "that's my slide, there's my name, and that's what I do". He then went into how people use to do presentations, then Powerpoint came along, then they had pictures on them, then sound, then bullets, then flying bullets etc etc, and he explained as all these wonderful ways of presenting went up, the standards of peoples presentations went down and down. He then spoke for 20 minutes with no notes and his one slide still on the screen. The message has been heeded, I've noticed that peoples presentations don't have as many of the above features anymore
