Well that saved some grief from parents suing the education authority for their offspring slipping over in the playground then ey?
A young life wasted because of H&S. Simple as. eeek:
Horrendous and very very sad. noooo:
-
A young life wasted because of H&S
A very tenuous argument to say the least.

Schools closed nationwide because of the possible dangers to kids going to, coming from, and being at school on H&S grounds.
Kids therefore allowed to do as they please for the day, unsupervised in the main, with the tragic and needless consequences as is of this case.
These children should have been at school, supervised and out of the danger that they put themselves in.
My daughter and fellow pupils weren't allowed to go outside whilst at school, as the snow was deemed to be a danger to them.
-
the snow was deemed to be a danger to them
More idiocy. The Boy has had a great time snowballing (at school). All kids want to be out in the snow. And it is dangerous noooo:. Wrong sort of snow?

We all know that snow has its hazards. All I'm saying is that if it wasn't for these completely OTT H&S rulings regarding school 'snow' closures, this girl would still be alive this morning.
One of the other local secondary schools around here was closed on Monday in anticipation of snow!! eeek:
The streets around here were alive with the sound of yobinism all day long. evil:
-
So what you were saying, and the point was made on R4 this monring, that by closing schools on H&S grounds kids went out into the snow anyhow and some got killed, which would not have been the case if they had been at school in the first place.
-
It's still a very weak argument. noooo:
-
But surely this was simply an accident. Ok it happened because she was not at school but she may have been just as likely to get killed crossing the road on her way home.
We will never be able to eliminate things like this happening
-
They sledged into a barbed wire fence on a bit of metal they had found. Sounds more like Darwin at work than H&s madness tome
-
This could have happened at the weekend, so the poor girl wouldn't have been at school anyway. It was a tragic accident, nothing more.

In this particular case YES!

Sounds like kids having fun to me...
We used to slide down the side of the local reservoir all year round on bits of old cardboard, metal, etc. and there was a cast iron spikey railing fence thing at the bottom... We had great fun!
-
Iused to go sledging at aplace outside Nottingham. At the bottom of the hill was a low wall with a 4 foot drop on the other side.
Bone jarring fun!

There you are then...

Well it didn't, and the snow may have all gone by the coming weekend.
This girl WOULD be alive this morning if the school hadn't been closed for H&S reasons, that's all I'm saying.
It's the irony of it all that's getting to me.

I do think it absurd that the schools close at the first touch (or threat) of snow...
But I don't think you can link the two so easily... she could have got run over on the way to school... in fact it might be interesting if we could compare the injuries sustained from staying at home to those actually going out to school and back... of course we can't...
-
I don't think you can blame the school closures for that. Basically if parents weren't so quick to blame the educational establishments for accidents that happened on school property the schools would probably have remained open as they used to back in the day. Blame the sue happy culture we have for the girl's accident or the parents that brought her up with no sense or the fact that she was out without supervision. You can hardly blame the schools shutting for that sort of thing.

At the risk of lowering the tone whistle:
-
Ahhh, RUGS to all of you. ::)
I still feel this was a totally avoidable accident due to complete and totally OTT H&S nonsense.
-
Yes but if you take your arguement one step further then the reason we have OTT H&S nonsense is because of the parents in the first place. There was talk of making the teachers go in to Mr Wench's school on Monday and Tuesday as it was the little darling's parents claiming that was the cause for concern not the safety of the kids or the staff.
The fact that schools can't afford to pay the massive loads of compensation if an accident had happened and the parents had claimed was the reason that they shut, no other reason.
-
So what's the answer to this never ending spiral into the seemingly bottomless pit of claiming for every scratch and bruise? Do away with insurance all together p'raps? rubschin:
-
Parents with some sense might be a start!
-
That counts me and him out then redface:
-
Parents with some sense might be a start!
Nowt to do with sense. It's just bloody ££££££££££££££££££ greed, that's all. evil:
-
Common sense and a sense of personal responsibility, sadly lacking in populace at large who seem to believe nothing is their fault.
-
[serious] Of course this is a sad incident, but I fear that all the do-gooder H&S restrictions (not the claim avoidance sort) are preventing children from learning about the world and having fun as well.
When I was a kid there was always someone with a limb in plaster from jumping/falling off something while at play and there were lasting injuries and indeed tragedies, but on the whole kids learned what hurt and what to avoid.
We are losing all this and breeding fat yobs wrapped in cotton wool. [/serious]
-
Hear hear. I can't recall the last time I saw some kid bandaged up like a mummy.

Completely agreed, but until the vast majority of parents come to the same conclusion then the OTT H&S restrictions are necessary in order to protect institutions. Which in the main are funded by our taxes. Personally I'd rather the kids had a couple of days off school and they had the thousands of pounds to spend on actual school related items rather than on paying some numpty who thought they'd make a quick buck suing someone.

Conversely, droppng my children off at school last week we saw a lad they know hobbling past on crutches. In the conversation that followed they remarked that there's always some child sporting a broken limb or some such in the school.
