Title: Family Tree
Post by: Snoopy on February 01, 2009, 05:55:04 PM
As I have told you so many times you are probably bored stiff with hearing it I am very keen on researching my family tree. In this enterprise I have found a number of distant cousins still alive and we correspond whenever any of us find anything of interest The following is extracted from an email received today:

Quote
I thought I'd let you know that I've located one of Great Great Grandmother Lucy's brothers.  He was convicted of highway robbery in Wiltshire in 1840, and transported to Tasmania the following year.

We've found all his records online.  He never married.  Obviously the black sheep of the family!

There is a long write-up in the local paper in Wiltshire, 2,200 words long which gives lots of details of his crime.

I have had a quick look at the records and he was transported for life. The journey out took 4 months from April to August 1841. He died in Tasmania in 1877.

All jokes about Adam Ant have already been done by the wife ~ Thank you.  ::)

The funny thing is that he lived in Sussex but was caught "in the act" in Wiltshire. The other side of my family came from Wiltshire ~  rubschin: I wonder if I owe myself any money?

Bin there, done that, two weeks ago.
I may not have a rug or even a bread slicer BUT I do have an annual subscription to the Records Office you know.

Which for the uninitiated means I get to see released documents early. whistle:

My lot are a right bunch. I've one who ended his days in Broadmoor for taking a hammer to his mother and sister and now one who got transported for being a Highwayman. Another fell off the gangplank of his ship, returning drunk from leave, and drowned before they could fish him out. A great uncle was a chef on the Titanic and survived not only the sinking but also the food ~ meanwhile my Mother's father deserted from the army as he hated marching and, in order to hide from the law, joined another regiment (cavalry) and ended up in the Boer War at Mafeking. Another great great Grandfather was a "Bible Christian" which was, apparently, a breakaway sect of the Weslyans who all signed the pledge and paraded round the pubs of Southampton trying to get the sailors and dockers to give up the demon drink and ended up getting beaten up every Saturday night.
All fvcking barmy ~ the whole lot of us!

There is nothing wrong in being a highwayman!

Not even at the point of a gun?   lol:

Actually he was charged with Highway Robbery ~ perhaps he worked for the DVLA or Esso.
