Title: Money making me unhappy
Post by: GROWLER on January 18, 2009, 10:39:04 AM
Don't take the piss, and don't start hollering "well give it to me then" either. noooo:

Just banked a fairly substantial cheque following the sale of my deceased dads and step mothers flat sale. Been divided up by 2 and then the 50% remaining divided by two again between my bruvver and myself, so it's not an earth shattering amount, but more than I've ever seen in my account.
To be quite honest, it's making me feel quite pensive, as I'm worried about it just disappearing gradually over the coming months, and once it's gone, it's gone.
When I banked it, the knives were out immidiately with the cashier trying to pursuade me to make an appointment to come in and have a 'cosy friendly' chat as to how they could make it work best for me. Yea, righ'on sister. Bwankers.

So, apart from investing in a bit of equipment for Swamp 2 (risky enough in itself) paying off a small loan or two, ferkling the house up with some well overdue and totally unexciting and expensive repairs such as gutters, barge boards and soffits, what the hell am I going to do with it?
Invest?
WHERE though, as all rates are currently total shite, and the thought of this dosh just sitting in some bank 'earning' a couple of hundred quid over 12 months is totally unappealing.

Anyone got any sensible suggestions, as I'm boloxed if I have any tbh chief.
I can quite catergorically say, that money does not make you happy....unless it's of life changing amounts I suppose. Shrugs:

I recently heard a sensible argument in favour of placing any spare cash in Premium Bonds for the time being. It won't earn any interest but it is at least safe and should your number come up you would not be taxed on the winnings. Also you can withdraw by cashing in some or all of your bonds at anytime (takes about seven days). The "radio pundit" was actually a hedge fund manager who claimed this was where he was salting his spare cash away. Others on the Money Programme (Radio Four) agreed with him that this was probably a good way of ensuring that your money was safe, that any winnings would be a tax free bonus and that, all in all, given the current rate of inflation making interest virtually non existant he couldn't lose. Of course should interest rates improve you could cash in your bonds and place the money in an interest earning account somewhere.

There ~ you didn't expect a sensible answer did you ~ bet you are surprised

I heard the PO Savings bank was prolly OK too. Or Bonds, but I don't understand those, so ignore me

Pay off your debts and do the things you have always said you had wanted to do but have always found a reason not to - that climb to the base camp of Everest for example  lol:

Go on treat yourself a little and put some aside for a even rainier day  lol:

Pay off credit cards then cut them up.
Half in premium bonds and half in an instant access saving account (online ones give slightly better rates)

If you don't like any of those, how about Turnip Futures?

Someone I work with from time to time told me they'd pulled out all their ISAs and put them in Blue Chips  Shrugs:

Might be worth enquiring and doing a little research. Failing that the premium bonds route's a good one but remember you're not in the draw for a month or two. I did that a few years ago and a couple of small wins made more than shoving it in an ISA.

I do like the idea of doing something you've always wanted to do but were too cash strapped to indulge.  cloud9:

Yes. Must have been 'somewhere else', as I think I have made it public that it is/has been one of my life long ambitions to do just that.
If you guessed at it, then that is bloody spooky. eeek:

Thanks for that.
When I say it's a pipe dream, I mean I don't know if 'physically' my body would be able to take it cus of this bastard illness thing of mine. As much as I love hillwalking with the odd mountain chucked in now and then, I am rather slow cus of me legs get very tired, as I found out to my cost on Snowdon on NYD 2 weeks ago. I rather think a certain pace has to be maintained to keep on schedule. I'll certainly look into it though, as it would be a life long ambition at relatively low cost realised. cloud9:
The old alltitude sickness is something else too. Did you see Michael Palin's expedition programme on the tv a couple of years ago? He was bloody ill, and he's a fit....ish bloke. eeek:

Many years ago I saw the sunrise over the Himalaya mountains from Tiger Hill, Darjeeling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Hill,_Darjeeling)

Awesome.

There was once an old Dutch seaman who had reached retirement after many many years at sea. He asked his faithful old wife what they should do in retirement.
"Well" she said "I have spent all these years whilst you have been at sea watching across the flat fields of Holland waiting to see you coming home on leave. I think I would like a change"
The old seadog agreed that after years of gazing at the flatness of the oceans with only a distant horizon he too would like a change of scene so they moved to Switzerland. They marvelled at the mountains, the snowy peaks all around them but within three months they had sold up and returned to their old village in Holland.
"Why have you come back?" asked all the neighbours "What was wrong with Switzerland ~ was it the people?"
"No" replied the old salt "It was the mountains ~ they get in the way of the view"
