I think a lot of what you say is more a case of in what context its said tbh. I can't think of anyone personally that doesn't use the term he used.
'Arry used the 'offensive' ::) word whilst talking about a friend and Army colleauge ffs!
P'raps the chap concerned should be asked if HE was offended before the press and media start getting on his back?
We all have pet names for each other, and I regulary get called a fat and ugly bad tempered inconsiderate ranting selfish munter of a bastard, and sometimes werser. eeek:
Do I get upset about it?
No, IF it's said in a banterish type manner, not at all. noooo:

Can I third all that has been said? ~ IMO the medja are making up the news yet again. Nobody gives a shite except those who will (i) bash anything the Royals do/say (ii) make a living out of stirring up trouble (iii) the fvcking BBC who have run this as the first item of headline news on every single news broadcast on all radio and TV channels since the papers hit the streets at 10pm last night, ranking it more important that the troubles in Palestine and the drowning of 250 people on a capsized ferry ~ but of course those that have been drowned are Pakis aren't they. ::)
-
It strikes me that it's only the meeja and the usual rent-a-quote tossers that are making a song and dance about it. As somebody on the box said, in the army, if you're Welsh you're Taffy, if you're Scots, you're Jock, and if you're Irish, you're Paddy. FFS, I'm a Northerner living in the South, when I ring some colleagues I'm greeted with, "hello Norhern bastard", and I reciprocate, no malice, just lads being lads, a bit of banter that helps get you through the day
I'm convinced these tossers have competitions to see who can throw the biggest stone they can into the pond and see who can cause the most ripples. I shall now step down off my soapbox, I'm getting vertigo cussing:

We all seem to agree here.

Cabinet minister John Denham said: "This sort of language can be seen as offensive, is offensive, is gradually going out of use in our society, and he's apologised for it."
No it's not you 'kin tosser, and it's NOT going out of use either.
When you last here someone talking about a Pakistani, and what do you hear them say?
Pakistani? Do you bollox. noooo:
It's Paki', and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's only a bloody abbreviation of the full word anyawy for FS!!! Banghead
Australian> Aussie,
Italian> Iti'
Swedish>Swede'
British> Brit'
Denham> Tosser.
What the in the name of bastard hell blazes and damnation is the difference...PLEASE, cus I'm buggered if i know chief. ::)?

And what do you call a Pakistani who isn't a corner shop owner?
Doctor!
Why did the Romans build straight roads?
So the Pakistanis couldn't open corner shops!
And many more that become increasingly offensive but in 'arry's case nothing more than a storm in a tea cup being whipped up by the BBC.-
-
Would you call a 'Paki' a Paki to his face?
Think on.
-
Would you call a 'Paki' a Paki to his face?
Think on.
Well you wouldn't dare do so now... noooo:
The question is, was it an acceptable term once as an abbreviation of Pakistani and has it been turned into something altogether different?
-
Would you call a 'Paki' a Paki to his face?
Think on.
I call Scottish people "Jock" and Welsh people "Taffy" - no problem. The bigger problem is a lot of these so called "Pakis" are actually Indian and they would take offence, so it would never be wise to say.
-
Prince Phillip would be proud noooo:
Maybe there is no need for DNA tests - he must be the son of Charles after all eeek:

lol:
I still have my doubts Miss D.

But the soldier's father, Muhammad Yaqoob Khan Abbasi, accused Harry - who is third in line to the throne - of using a "hate word" against his son.
Speaking from his home in Pakistan's North West Frontier, Mr Abbasi told the Daily Mail: "When I saw the video I was very, very hurt. I strongly condemn the fact that Prince Harry used that language against my son. That word he used is a hate word and should never be used against any Pakistani.
"Prince Harry should apologise to the Pakistani Army and to the Pakistani government for this. I cannot accept his apology unless they first accept his apology."
Grrrrrrrrr, stand by for inement volcanic proportions bladder eruption. cussing:
The Father's now joined the frenzy.
Yes, IF, I say IF IF IF IF BLOODY IF, it's used in the wrong context, then yes, it could p'raps be classed as insulting I suppose, if your mind and body are made from silk petals.
Why haven't we heard from the lad concerned btw, or has he been too mentally traumatised to comment?
IT'S AN ABBREVIATION! What the hell is wrong with these people?
Don't you DARE call me a (abbreviated) BRIT! Banghead
-
'Paki' is a derogatory term, it is used to marginalise and demean one group of people and to make the user feel superior. 'Brit' or 'Aussie' hasn't the same connotation although 'Iti' (eye-tie) has.
IMO 'Jock' and 'Taffy' are heading the same same way as 'Paki'
-
IMO there are more important questions that need to be addressed.
(i) Who released this "Home Video" to the press? ~ Particularly to the News of the World owned by that well know REPUBLICAN Australian (or Aussie if you prefer) Rupert Murdoch. Who made money out of this deal? (The name Max Clifford always springs to mind but it could be any other "publicist")
(ii) What action is being taken to uncover and charge with theft whoever stole it ~ since it was a personal video diary belonging to the Prince it must have been taken by someone.
(iii) Why did the BBC feel it was more newsworthy that the death by drowning of some 250 Indonesians whose ferry sank in a storm? In fact it was even more newsworthy than the death of yet another British (or Brit if you prefer) Marine in Afghanistan. Both events ranked lower down the order of news items announced on every BBC news broadcast throughout Sunday and yet the Prince Harry story is three years old and the other two events happened on Saturday/Sunday.
(iv) What business is it of the various "talking heads" from the usual "Rent a quote" mob wheeled into studios by the BBC? The slimy Keith Vaz MP was on the Today Programme this morning.
(v) Why have we not heard anything from the cadet who was nicknamed "Our Little Paki" apparently by the whole platoon? Could it be that he is keeping quiet or that what he is saying does not suit the lynch mob currently making a mountain out of a very old molehill?
AND FINALLY
Does it actually matter ~ have you heard what these people call us?
-
Would you call a 'Paki' a Paki to his face?
Think on.
No, the same as they wouldn't call me "a Brit" to mine.
The few that I know and do business with are fine people, and we call each other names such as 'fat bastard' and 'ugly get', terms of 'endearment' in our own banterish way I suppose, but heard by outsiders who don't know what's going on could be termed as extremely offensive I suppose, far more so than Paki or Brit.
It's all about HOW it's said and in what context, such as the way it was said by HRH.
-
have you heard what these people call us?
No, please enlighten me.

Infidel's, well some of 'them'
I find THAT offensive tbh., and it IS an offensive word. Angry9:
It's not an abbreviation of anything , and it causes trouble.

I bloody well would.

Further to the debate ~ Many people of Asian Origins (usually second or third generation so British Born) call one another Paki just as many West Indians and Black Americans call one another Nigger. Sometimes they say this as almost a term of affection as between members of a club but at other times they use it as an insult. I personally have been called An Infidel, Whitey, Honkey, White Bastard, Child Killer (by a Palestinian Arab). We are "Pigs" to many Chinese, Wingeing Poms to almost all Australians and many Americans call us cowards. The French call s Rostbifs but often follow this with Merde.
Much depends on how the words are used whether offence is meant or not but everyone in the services has a nickname and usually it is associated with their origins.
In Pakistan they have burned our flags and "leaders" effigies.
They shout insults in our streets (see recent "protests") and declare that we should all be killed. They blow us up and praise those who try to whilst they live among us.
Perhaps the biggest insult of all is that so many of them perceive us as a "Soft Touch" and would rather live here being called Paki, accepting all the handouts that we offer them, than return to the poverty, mud huts and above all the caste system that makes many of them "untouchables" in their own countries.

In addition to those listed by Snoopy, I have also been called 'Gringo' and the context is what determines the insult.
I fear this is just another example of PC gone mad, of course you can find a few 'spokesmen' (sorry, spokespeople) who will condemn the existence of the word 'Paki' as proof of a Western plot to destroy Islam.
It is equally easy to find British people to espouse the vilest forms of real racism, even though the vast majority of Brits, in my experience, are quite happy to live and let live when it comes to the whole spectrum of people in the country.
The real threat is from those who use the perceived insults and cultural differences to brainwash the vulnerable and ignorant into paranoia and violence.

The Royal family have found themselves caught up in a new race row after it emerged the Prince of Wales has been calling an Asian friend by the nickname "Sooty".
Charles has been referring to Kolin Dhillon by the moniker for years whenever they meet at Cirencester Polo club where they are both members, according to a source.

Interesting observations from inspectorgadget (http://inspectorgadget.wordpress.com/2009/01/12/blah/)
As a former British Army soldier I can categorically tell you that the term “Paki” would have been completely unacceptable, even as a nick-name, from anyone, let alone an Officer. And that was before Political Correctness was invented.
In my Regiment people were called Lofty, Ginger, Jock and Taffy. The term Paki would have been ‘across the line’ and we knew it. That expression was fighting talk and no less. The worst I ever heard was a black Corporal who was universally called “Benson” after a character in a popular TV comedy at the time.

I recall a popular expression at the time was "Paint me black and call me Benson" used when given any task that one didn't fancy.
