Title: Here we go again
Post by: Snoopy on September 25, 2008, 04:51:49 PM
Another data filled CD has been "lost". This time it contains details of thousands of teachers, names, addresses, pay scales, schools they work at, email addresses etc.
Cannot supply a link, just picked it up on the BBC News on Radio Four but it is not yet on their web-site.
The blog section of TES has a comment or two on it though http://community.tes.co.uk/forums/t/248341.aspx

I know I've said similar in every thread about data loss that has been posted but if a company had managed to bollix up data losses with the regularity of the government they would have been shut down long before now.

And once again its down to an elementary cock up. Posting CD's has to be one of the worst ideas going. If you have to send them in that fashion then use PGP encrypted disks and send by an approved business courier, at least they will sign for it and ensure it gets where it is supposed to.

However the transfer could just have easily been done using a secure FTP server.

There can't be much data that they haven't given away now can there...? I guess that solves the problem in the long term...  noooo:

This is why it will be a cold day in hell before I get an ID card. While I know that the odds are the government will already have lost all the information about me held on it I can at least be assured that they cant cock it up and lose it again.
