What is the plural of dwarf?
-
Dwarfs...
-
The original concept of dwarves is very difficult to determine. The sources closest to the original Germanic mythology come from Norse Mythology, but even these are scarce and varied. Sources have gradually given dwarves more comical and superstitious roles.[1] Dwarves were certainly humanoid, but sources differ over their height, their lifestyles, and their similarity to elves. Considering early sources, and considering the dwarves' nature, original dwarves seem fully human height. They had strong associations with death[2][3]: paled skin; dark hair; connections with the earth; their role in mythology. They followed animistic traditions, showing similarities to such concepts of the dead.

[fact]
'Dwarf' is of Germanic/Nordic origin, so the original plural would have been 'Dwarfen'
Usually when such words are adopted in English, the 'n' becomes 's'.
Notable exceptions are words like 'horse' which would have been expected to follow the rule of 'ox' to 'oxen' i.e. 'horse' to 'horsen' not 'horses'
[/fact]

Fowler's "Modern English Usage" says
"The traditional pl. form in BrE is dwarfs, but dwarves is now increasingly being used, as it has been for a long time outside the UK. I have examples of dwarfs from BrE (C. S. Lewis, P. Lively, local and national newspapers) and AmE (R. Merton, P. Roth) sources; and of dwarves from BrE (A. Brookner, J.R.R.Tolkien, local and national newspapers) AmE (J.Updike, a Chicago newspaper). NZ (M. Gee, Rosie Scott). and S. African (J.M. Coetzee, D. Lessing) sources."
In summary then Fowler, the accepted authority, allows us to choose for ourselves between dwarfs and dwarves citing impeccable sources for both derivations.
Interestingly for those who like to rely on the Microsoft spell checker whilst it demands that we change dwarves to dwarfs it wants us to change wharfs to wharves ~ but that is another argument.
I suggest we toss a coin ~ unless anyone has a PORG (person of restricted growth) to hand in which case we could toss the dwarf.
-
Just a thought but what context are the dwarves being taken from Nick. If she is on about generic mythology then I'd say dwarves but if she is taking them through something like The Lord of the Rings then have a look in the book and see how the author spelt it.
-
It's dwarfs. End of.

Why look at Lord of the Rings? ~ I've already quoted the author on the subject Banghead

I used it as an example because its normally the first thing that comes to mind when people think of fantasy hound. It could just as easily been a Gemmell novel or part of the Riftwar saga.

Yes... it prolly changed between the begging and the end of the lesson... noooo:
-
National Curriculum only sets the framework ~ the teachers decide how it is implemented in each lesson.
In this case the NC would say something about recognising "Word Families" (as they like to call them) and the teacher will have selected the words she would use to illustrate the point.
Whilst I personally object to the 600 plus pages of the National Curriculum (Compared to less than 30 pages in Sweden) as a principle, I object even more strongly to it being used as an excuse by poor teachers.

But your spelling is not at fault ~ you have simply used the wrong word. No spell checker known to man would have picked that up. I find this happens to me quite often, giving me paws to wonder is indeed my brain instructions to my fingers are being misunderstood or if the computer thinks it knows what I am writing and finishes the word for me. As a demonstration of right spelling/wrong word I know it should have been pause but the spell checker doesn't.
