A now dead Jazz Musician, Chairman of a panel game, raconteur and all round good guy. One of the wittiest and cleverest men on radio for the past 50 years. He died recently and this Sunday Radio Four is giving over several hours to tribute programmes.

You know the game "Mornington Crescent" ~ a complete non game? He invented it!

The Man:
Humphrey Richard Adeane Lyttelton (23 May 1921 – 25 April 2008), also known as Humph, was an English jazz musician and broadcaster, and chairman of the BBC radio programme I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. He was a cousin of the 10th Viscount Cobham and a great-nephew of the politician and sportsman Alfred Lyttelton, who was the first man to represent England at both football and cricket.

Quote
Humph Sunday - 15 June 2008

I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue returns on Monday 16 June with a repeat of some of its greatest episodes.

In addition to this, as a tribute to the programme's chairman and jazz legend Humphrey Lyttelton who died recently aged 86, Radio 4 is dedicating Sunday 15 June to his memory with these programmes:

Desert Island Discs, 11.15am-noon
Humphrey Lyttelton's final appearance on the desert island.

Chairman Humph — a Tribute, 12.00-1.00pm
Stephen Fry presents a homage to Humphrey Lyttelton through the eyes of his close friends and admirers — from Dame Judi Dench to Radiohead — and features highlights taken from his 36 years from I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue.

The King of the Swingers, 1.30-2.00pm
Humphrey Lyttelton presents a profile of trumpeter and singer Louis Prima, who was one of the most accomplished jazz musicians of the 20th century, yet now remembered mostly for voicing a cartoon monkey — King Louis in The Jungle Book.

Wasn't it good!
I listened in awe at the sheer genius of the man ~ loved the "accident" that caught him playing the trumpet on a recording of the celebratory London crownds on VE Day and howled with laughter (and a few tears) at his "intros" to the panel game.

Anyone who has incidents like setting fire to a vicar with a head butt and being on the same bill as a one-legged tap dancer... what a life!

Totally irreplaceable.
