Title: Kids!
Post by: Nick on May 16, 2008, 10:06:26 AM
Not sure where I stand on this (though in truth I think I do)

So, the mother, who is forking out about £6K a year for her wastrel son, asks the University what he is doing all day.

Prof tells her and gets disciplined

The university's data protection officer looked into the matter and agreed Professor Johnes had breached the Data Protection Act because he gave out information personal to the student.

As reported before, Mrs Nick gets the parents of 20+ year olds turning up with their "babies" asking about stuff/I have warned her about this one.

Madness!

Wenchy is closer to some of this than most of us (in time). WHat views?

The age we live in I'm afraid. I sincerely hope that the mother stops paying and then the wastrel can either fund it himself by working in McDonalds or drop out of uni, come home, get a job and attend the local college for evening classes if he wants more education.

My Dad tried to do it to me. I was furious!

But as you say, they are paying for it so I suppose they have a right. It is a tricky one.

He/she who pays is entitled (IMHO) to ensure value for money. If the child cannot be trusted, and this one clearly cannot be, then the parent has a duty to do what is best for them.

That said I didn't go to Uni but my understanding is that it is not like school where you attend lessons all day 9 to 4 but are in fact left pretty much to choose which lectures to attend and when/what to study. It does seem that "Mum" has rather got the wrong end of the stick here.

Thing is you don't actually have all that many contact hours. I remember my first year I had five hours of lectures and five hours of seminars a week and that was it. Not great really. If you can't manage to attend 10 hours of actual "teaching" a week then there is something pretty off.

However, my Dad was also trying to get hold of my medical records at the same time. Had that not been the case I probably would have been more understanding.
