Why oh why isn't this available here? sad24:

I'm sure it will be soon enough.
Meanwhile what's wrong with the library reading room?
-
You can get batteries for it! happy088

Nothing. But I was thinking of my two week holiday in the Summer and the weight restrictions on baggage. There is no way in hell I will be able to take anywhere near enough reading material! This would be perfect! As it would be for my commuting!
-
But does it smell right?
Books just have that aroma cloud9:
-
rubschin:
Solution:
Order reading material on line and have it sent to your holiday destination by Amazon. You don't then need to carry it out with you and having read it sell it back via Amazon Market Place.

I like their chocolate eggs as well. cloud9:

As would this! rubschin: I shall have to have a think about this. rubschin:

Amazon will deliver anywhere in the EC but they do charge a bit extra for it. I have used this method to get books to my niece in Switzerland when my brother asked me to get some books she wanted as a pressy from him but he
couldn't be arsed didn't want to have to carry them on the plane.
And for the pedants I know Switzerland is not in the EC
-
It won't be cheap. Think it said it was a flat rate of 4ish pounds plus something per book. But it would remove the hassle that is for sure.

Or EU even eveilgrin:

Or whatever they are calling themselves today ::)

Or on the other hand you could pick up a half decent PDA for less than that install the mobile versions of Acrobat and Microsoft reader on the thing and then download the PDF and LIT versions of your books to read in just the same way. I have a substantial library on my PDA for when I'm working away from home.
It also has the advantage of being able to play films and TV programs that you have converted.

Nice, but one of the things that appealed about the kindle was the whisper network thing.

whisper network? rubschin:

whisper network? rubschin:
Shhhsssss... razz:
-
whisper network? rubschin:
Basically a continually connected wireless feed that allows you to download effortlessly from the ether. You can subscribe to magazines, daily newspapers etc. You need never connect it to your pc and can have a book instantally regardless of where you are.

She has been reading a a book or summat

Been reading the interwebs.

whisper network? rubschin:
Is this a choccy thing?

You need a Cadbury router.

There was a programme about these devices on Radio Four last night. The general advice was to wait as better and cheaper are coming to the market soon. There was considerable discussion, as might be anticipated, about traditional publishers being as obstructive as possible but the feeling was that these problems would be overcome along with those associated with reading from screens and possible "eye- strain", headaches etc that have apparently been experienced by many users. The summary seemed to be that this technology is improving, that prices will dip below £100 in a year or so and that they may well be the next "must have".
-
I would tend to agree with them. I think the big step came when they created the screen without the back light which is helping the eyestrain issue. I'm not normally that over excitable about a new gadget but I really can't wait for this one. Although I will be waiting till it has dropped in price and is as bugfree as it can be.
Although I wouldn't use it to replace all book purchases necessarily but for regular everyday trash reading it will be my method of choice.

See ~ It's not hard to get back on topic is it whistle:

I'm tempted, especially the newspaper subscription. Getting the Indy automatically downloaded each morning sounds good.

They sent me a link the other day... it does look rather cool... rubschin:

Does it come with the "accessory" for those of us like to be read to?

It is fabulous! A friend has purchased one and I had a play. Incredible. And as Mort points out the daily newspaper/magazine download function is worth it for that alone!
-
I want it... redface:
-
So do I. redface:
But I might wait until it is properly released in the UK. eg. books, kindle etc being actually available from the uk site.
-
I'm still not sure ~ nothing can replace a real book but I can see that being useful, if your eyes can stand it.
-
I'll probably wait on the UK version as well.
I like reading in the bath but I'd be wary of taking the Kindle in with me. eeek:
-
Might be hard to drape it over a radiator after falling asleep in the bath Uncle. noooo:
-
They never dry off properly but at least it's only ?7.99 down the drain.
-
What law of science is it that makes them exactly two and one third thicker after they've been dried over a radiator?
-

I never understood that... noooo:
-
The printing is still perfectly readable, the pages don't get longer or wider ~ just thicker ............. Baffled me for years rubschin:
-
I want it... redface:
I got it!
I've moved to The Dark Side and bought a Kindle... I loves it! cloud9:
-
Technology has come on quite a bit in the last 14 years (14!) but nothing compares to a real book. Admittedly my eyes aren't what they used to be so variable font size would be handy.

I have a kindle fire so it may be different but if you tap the screen twice while you have an ebook open on the kindle app then tap the Aa icon at the top and you should see a font selection screen and a font size slider.

One of our friends absolutely loves hers, I just use the kindle app on the phone.

I used to think the same...
I got the Kindle Paperwhite Signature (https://www.amazon.co.uk/kindle-paperwhite-32-gb-now-with-a-68-display-and-adjustable-warm-light-agave-green/dp/B08N2QK2TG/ref=sr_1_3?crid=33E1DEK7UB8AO&keywords=kindle%2Bpaperwhite%2B2023&qid=1697689014&sprefix=kindle%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-3&th=1) and a case...
It is about the size and weight of a book and actually I don't miss the book 'feel' with it...
Plus my books used to come from the UK (Amazon) which can take weeks... I just downloaded my latest book* in a few seconds...
* Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor...

 I still have somewhere my 2010 vintage (free 3G anywhere) Kindle. Absolute brilliant device for its time.
