I may have been exceptional (but I know I wasn't) in that on leaving school I took a year off, bummed around Europe on next to nothing for a year and then moved myself to London, aged 19, to go to University.
I managed my money, found places to live, made friends, cooked, did my own laundry and did my university work.
This morning Mrs Nick has a meeting with some of her students. All are presently on a year at the University of Seville. (Sunshine, SPain, general loveliness). All are supported by European money to spend time there. Accommodation is found for them.Lectures are put on their timetables. All they have to do is hang around and learn Spanish. What a joy.
No
The little dears are unhappy. They can't make friends sad24: They don't like Seville sad24: They don't like the university sad24: They find it all a bit "strange" sad24:
All of them are over 20 years old. One is 25.
All of them are bringing their MOTHERS to the meeting eeek:
What kind of generation has been bred here!!?? noooo:

<GOBSMACKED>
I don't supposes Mrs Nick can tell them how fortunate they are either for fear of hurting their feelings.
-
I am awaiting a report of the meeting. It is happening currently.

There must be a money-making scheme here... rubschin:

Ahhhhh!
To be fair to them, it is difficult. I remember when I left Spain to come over here for Uni I was sodding miserable. And I used to be quite a sociable individual. But being that far away from the familiar in a different cultural setting can do strange things to a persons mind. Although I am suprised it is all of them.

We are going through agonies with the THW about similar issues. I have been forced to point out that at her age (14.75yrs) I had already submitted my application to the RAF for an apprenticeship and within five months of my 15th Birthday had taken all the apptitude/personality/pychological/medical tests (7 days of testing at RAF Cardington) and was waiting for my rail warrant to whisk me away from home for many years. In fact I never returned to home as such except as an occasional visitor.
-
My Dad pointed out the same things to me. I pointed out that perhaps had he not made home such a pleasant place to be perhaps I would have wanted to leave ASAP too.
See what I did there. Kissing up and getting my own way all at the same time! ;)

::) And you haven't changed at all.

It is cheaper to live at home and have Mummy and Daddy pay for your food etc than it is to be on your own!
