On a serious side ....everyone is entitled to sell his/her talents to the highest bidder is how I see it and I would not deny that some nurses are worth their weight in gold but then there are a great many who wear the uniform who, frankly, should pay the NHS for providing them with a chair on which to sit their fat arses for hours at a time whilst they chat the shift away with their mates. Not all nurses are "Angels of Mercy" as the tabloids would have us believe.
Based on my experiences in various hospitals over the last ten years I would say that 75% of the nursing is done by 33% of the nurses ... the rest by other patients and visitors. Having been hospitalised in Paris for 10 days in 1998 I can assure you that things are very different there. The NHS has become a sanctuary for far too many bone idle nurses, over paid doctors and above all superfluous managers.

Since they made nursing a "graduate" profession things have gone downhill.

So true. I have actually heard a young nurse tell a patient that "You'll have to wait, I am a graduate, I don't make beds .... we have people to do that"  noooo:

Do the graduate ones wear special sorts of black stockings so you can see them coming and run the other way?

Given the size of so many nurses these days YES (Think Benny Hill character in The Italian Job)
Most nurses have what could best be described as Panoramic Arses (horizon to horizon)

Not a pay rise then?

Back on topic, doesn't every government bribe the voters when election time beckons? I'd accept cash for my vote as the promises never seem to materialise.

When I was a student nurse around '96 ish the startng salary for friends who had finished their training was around £18k. So far from being a great pay rise it seems that the rate has only gone up by 2 grand in 12 years.  Caused mainly by trusts being forced to keep spending down bringing in poorly paid nurses from overseas who still earn more here than they would at home.  cussing:
