Chancellor Alistair Darling is expected to announce higher taxes on alcohol and the most polluting cars when he unveils his first Budget later.
Reports suggest he may also replace air passenger duty with a tax on flights.

Okay, we know the economy is paddleless in Excrecia Avenue
Can I have your predictions for ways the will add extra tax revenue and how it will be dressed up as a benefit please? whistle:
Nearest to the bull wins a bottle of something passed by the management.
-
I've no idea but I'll bet every tax increase will be tied in to being 'green' ::)
-
Look at what has been in the news recently…
I predict a ‘gas guzzler’ supertax to save the planet.
Then a ‘binge drinking’ supertax possibly imposed as a ‘windfall’ tax on supermarkets or increased duty on lager.
-
Was watching some of the pre budget coverage on News 24 earlier, is it just coincidence or is that plank thats poking out from the top of Number 11 there for a reason?
Then a binge drinking supertax possibly imposed as a windfall tax on supermarkets or increased duty on lager.
But putting massive duty on booze would alienate their dole scrounging voters as they wouldnt be able to get as ratted at the weekend.

That’s why I favour the windfall tax on supermarkets… they can promote it as anti-booze yet the supermarkets will still sell it below cost and hence dole scrounging scum can still get out of their heads on it…

Ah but didnt you hear Hazel in the news recenty, its not the yobs that are the main drink problem. Its the quiet people who are having a couple of glasses of wine a night at home. Banghead

Headline news is that he’ll spare the motorist and not apply the 2p/litre fuel surcharge – what a nice man! cloud9:
The stupid bastards don’t mention that he is raking it in from VAT and Duty on record fuel prices! (https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Fsmileys%2Fangry031.gif&hash=0f2c859793bbf5eb014e9ce36e7c27069fb2ea94) (http://www.freesmileys.org)

I think they should change the format of the Budget Speech .... Pep it up a bit and get celebs to come on, each with an envelope which they will open and declare "In the Windfall Tax Category ..... And the winner is THE GOVERNMENT ~ hard luck Joe Public ..... maybe next year" and the next could be "In the Tax on Booze Category .... And the winner is THE TREASURY .... hard luck Joe Public..... maybe next year" and so on whilst all the Ministers sit around tables getting pissed and congratulating one another on another year of getting away with it.
I mean if you thought John Major was bland this b@st@rd has him beaten all hands down for grey blandness.

Excellent ;D
What time is kick off anyway?

Too much faff. Too big. Too many wires noooo:

Thinking of Nick without his TV .... he does at least have the inernet thingy as well as a radio. But does anyone else remember the News Cinemas? I'm sure there used to be one on Waterloo Station that later converted to showing cartoons, then was closed down. There must have been others that showed what were probably two day old newsreels on a loop every 15 minutes or so... But then we used to be able to send a postcard in the morning post to my Aunt on the other side of Southampton to say we would be coming to tea that afternoon and she would get the card well before we arrived. cloud9:
Yes I know I'm getting on and I realise that the world has changed but postcards in those days were almost as instant as an email and much nicer to receive.

Matthew Arnold recounts that he could send a postcard to his wife telling her he would be late home from work and her getting it delivered the same day.
Mind you, that was in 1851
Things have improved since then, obviously evil:

My bet is he'll do his usual trick of cribbing off George Osbourne and Vince Cable.
Extra duty on alcopops and strong cider..?

I switched off as soon as he stood up

So now it is over can someone tell me how it will effect me personally. A non smoking light drinker with a car.

Darling was awful .... but to be fair was boxed in by all of Brown's previous. I thought Cameron was very good, particularly when you recall that he doesn't get sight of the budget unitl the Chancaellor speaks.
I scored it a win for Cameron in every round.
Wenchy you will find that food prices will increase (because the cost of fuel will rise and nothing is being done to reduce farming costs) The price of utilities (Gas/Leccy etc) will increase and your dreamt of mortgage will receed even further. You will need to have bigger pockets to carry home the shopping as there will be no carrier bags. Other than that I reckon things will stay much the same for you. Tat will continue to be available.
-
It all sounded so good I was thinking of coming back! rubschin:
I though Cameron did very well… happy088
I didn’t bother listening to the end of Clegg’s speech… noooo:
-
Somehing has occured to me about the fuel duty. If you have an amphibious car such as a Hydra Spyder, does that mean you can qualify for red diesel which bypasses duty?

But the Tat tax is up by 70% noooo:
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO noooo:
I have to say that food does seem to be getting more expensive. Since when does a loaf of bread cost more than £1.50!?!?!
-
Make yer own> I do! eveilgrin:

We do but I had to buy a loaf the other day. Was too late to get the bread maker on/dough to rise etc and was so suprised.

Surprises can be nice eyes:

Mr Wench needs some lessons! eveilgrin:

In his first Budget he also said Child Benefit would rise from April 2009 to £20 week - a year earlier than planned.
Fab. Meanwhile I am £45 a week worse off!

Surprises can be nice eyes:
Do you mean surprise rises?
(dough of course)
