When are people going to learn, never buy a new microsoft OS for at least 5 years after its been released. In that time every other poor schmuck who forked out for it would have done most of the beta testing whistle:

How to repair Vista 'bimbo' OS problem.
1. Get XP disk
2. Insert XP disk into computer
3. Follow on screen instructions to overwrite boot area, removing vista install
4, wait patiently for XP to finish installing then reinstall all programs

If only it were that simple...

The number of computers I've ended up stripping vista out of, it gets easier as it goes on although Media Centre Edition threw a hissy fit the one time I tried replacing vista with it.

Not so fast!
Buy cheap PC with Vista installed (HP Compaq dx2300)
Vista too slow even tho PC has 3GHz dual core and 2G RAM
Backup all Vista stuff and application data
Use HP utility to back up operating system
Insert XP disc
XP installation formats disc and then copies all files
XP won't boot
XP needs SATA driver to recognise disc even tho it has formatted and copied files to it
Spend hours finding SATA driver (still not found the right one)
Find SATA driver
Re-install XP, press F6 to add extra driver
XP won't read extra driver from CD – needs floppy
PC doesn't have floppy drive
Spend hours finding working floppy drive and cable
Hunt for 3.5” floppy
Copy files to floppy
Configure PC with floppy drive
Re-install XP, press F6, load SATA driver, format drive copy files
XP won't boot – wrong SATA driver
In despair decide to return to Vista and start again
Load HP Recovery DVD created earlier
Boot from recovery DVD, format disc, copy files
Disc won't boot
Now have worthless pile of shite

ok Do you have a spare IDE drive handy and a connecton on your motherboard. If so rig that as your primary boot disk and dont put anything else on there apart from XP and relevant drivers etc. I would have had a similar problem with my machine if I hadn't gone down that route to give me more disk space for movies and other stuff.

No IDE... noooo:

This isnt as stupid a question as it sounds (I've seen IT staff make this error before) but are you using the right drivers, Do you have SATA or SATA2?

Banghead
I've spend two days trying to find the right driver! Banghead

Dunno if it is SATA 1 or 2...
If it was working I could run the Intel utility which detects the chipset but of course it isn't Banghead

what is the make and model of your motherboard?

what is the make and model of your motherboard?
Its bolted into an HP Compaq dx2300/PD925/160hqm/1.0L/11h
If you can work it out you are a better man than I... Banghead

out of interest how large are the SATA drives you are trying to set up?
-
out of interest how large are the SATA drives you are trying to set up?
160Gbyte
-
The standard issue disk for the model then, ok that rules out drive size as there is a SATA driver update for your machine on the HP site but it looks like its for 512Gb drives

Is it a Samsung hard disk?

Surely this belongs in the sad techy wanker forum?

MOve it there then. I am not even sure which language they are using whistle:

Well duh! ::)
I'm not a dribbling retard you know...
Is it important for me to dismantle the machine for you and find out?
BTW just stuck linux on it and it worked first time...
Hold on... linux sys it is a ST3160815AS
-
Now I remember why I built my own machine, makes it a hell of a lot easier to find drivers etc.
The only reason I was asking was that I misread the SATA firmware update on the HP site. its for a Samsung S166 hard drive which your machine may have previously had installed on it.
Unfortunately I've never used Linux so dont know about the diagnostic and setup tools on there although I'd guess there woudl be something to tell you the make of the drive.
Yoda is online (or was just now anyway) have you checked with him?

Well I managed to put it all back together…
I couldn’t get Windows XP to install on the new hardware even with the SATA drivers from Intel’s web site.
In desperation I decided to re-load Vista on the box but the recovery disc wouldn’t boot either (formatted the disc and copied all the files but no-can-do-boot.
So now I had a box that wouldn’t run its original Vista operating system and couldn’t be loaded with XP. The only thing that seemed logical (other than take it back to the shop where they wanted €187 to stick XP Pro on it) was to stick a copy of linux on (at least I could use it then).
So I popped-in a linux DVD and away it went – installed and booted first time although it did have to adjust the disc partitions as it said there were ‘two overlapping’ (?). Linux ran fine but I wondered if the partitioning was the problem…
So, back out with the XP discs and floppy with the drivers on it – went through the installation and bingo the system booted.
So after a mind boggling amount of software installing and update downloading I am up-and-running with XP. cloud9:

Service Pack 2 BM. Depending on how recent your copy of XP is it may be included in the install. If not its a load of 'fixes' to Windows. At least it is as long as you get the latest version. The original version knackered more computers than Nick on friday 13th

Nah. did all that, started off with an old copy so the disc space was limited to 138Gbytes but then downloaded all the patches, fixes, updates and service packs for XP and office... plus IE7 and Media Player 11, etc.
