Title: Advice about Wales.....
Post by: TG on January 04, 2008, 02:42:23 PM
Right. Before you all go zooming off topic with sheep jokes...

I am thinking about renting another cottage for a few days serious loafing about. Do any of you know anything about a place in Wales called Cowbridge?

It looks nice on the Web but there again, most places do.

Sorry ~ too far south for me.
I used to holiday a lot in Mid Wales and, in RAF days, spent quite a bit of time in the Brecons but South Wales is a mystery to me. Only times I've been there have been to watch Rugby (too many pints of Brains IIRC) and once to Tenby. All a bit much like Somerset I thought. They can be a bit "Welsh" down that way although they say that about the North. ::)

Friends of Mrs DS (#1) ran a poncy French restaurant there and we stayed one time.

Quaint but full of Welsh people (the town, not the restaurant).

Do not mention you know me.  whistle:

I used to go to Cowbridge a lot  cloud9:  but many years ago, it was well known for being a small market town with 8 pubs in the  High Street. I used to frequent The Bear Hotel and the Horse and Groom. Last time I was there was about 15 years ago and then only as far as the (at the time) new Indian Restaurant at the Cardiff end of Cowbridge. Prior to that it would have been 1971- 1972 so it may well have changed. It was very nice and quiet at the time, the market was good, some swanky dress shops and an interesting camping and hiking shop down a lane at the back of the High Street.

I have just discovered that they have a website and a web cam, but I could not make out much as it is very dark for some reason...  whistle:   http://www.cowbridge.co.uk/  Take a look for yourself.  Just found another one so also check here. http://www.cowbridgetown.co.uk/

I quite like it there. Pretty, good selection of tat shops, bit poncey pretty near the coast yet also near enough to Cardiff if you want to visit the Millenium Centre if there is anything good on.

Oh forget seeing anything in London ~ the prices are simply ridiculous.
I saw the Royal Ballet's Swan Lake in a Big Top in Milton Keynes some 25 years ago now.
Brilliant, front row seat and cost 50pence. All heavily subsidised by the now defunct brainchild of Thatcherism "The Milton Keynes Development Corporation".
