Well your question about the bear was answered in the very first reply and perhaps we should have locked it after that? Personally, I found the rest of the ‘chat’ in the thread quite entertaining but I can appreciate that our ‘style’ does not appeal to everybody…

To a certain extent I agree with you and I am well aware that I am one of the worst culprits. I did have a thought today about how a lot of those postings would seem to new comers and you are right. It came across at best as terribly cliquey.
However, what would you suggest? The thread that you are actually questioning didn't get dragged off topic until your question had been answered which personally I don't see a problem with. If you want to start a thread with a serious topic then please do so and request it stay on topic and I am sure that we will all attempt to keep it so and if we have anything to add we shall do so.
However, although I may have got the wrong end of the stick this site was never set up with the intention of it being strictly for debate and topics of the moment.

Well each to his own I suppose – this certainly isn’t a site for in-depth serious discussions at the moment, there are thousands of others dedicated to many subjects that cover that area….
I appreciate your feedback and certainly don’t consider myself to be ruffled by it… if you can think of a way we improve the site and increase the number of visitors without alienating those (including myself) that enjoy the ‘drivel’ and use the site on a daily basis I’d be happy to give it a trial.
A new section perhaps for ‘serious discussions’ would be easy to implement and as long as the ‘off topic’ alarm wasn’t raised every time anybody stepped minutely out of line I suspect that some of us would be pleased to post there…
Let us know your thoughts…

Welcome to our forum!
I was searching for somewhere ion the Internet to have a moan and perhaps meet likeminded people. The idea of a ?virtual pub? came to mind where you could exchange views, argue your point and generally put the world right. Even better, we?re not obliged to introduce the smoking ban on July 1st and have no annoying pop-up advertising to distract you!
Feel free to contribute your own thoughts and views ? there are separate sections for moaning, idle gossip and posting those wonderful internet jokes and cartoons that are always doing the rounds.
Like any pub it won?t suit everybody ? perhaps the one up the road with the pool table and loud juke box is more to your taste? However, we?d be delighted if you decide to stay a while and contribute to the board ? feel free to introduce yourself
Not exactly how the site has developed is it ??
Its like going into a pub and the only people in there is a small group of friends gathered around you're there stood by them not being asked to join in nor understanding or finding the coversation interesting cos its all about either their personal life or childish banter .

Not wishing to stir things up, so i'll keep it short lol: and sweet.
I must say that one of the reasons for my absence recently, has been for the very reasons that our learned friend Shy Talk has so eloquently stated.....i've felt as though i don't really fit in due to my apparent lack (to some it seems to me anyway) of intelligence and verbal ability to 'fit in' on some matters.
Rather than bite back and rant and rage, i simply decided that the best method of dealing with it was to simply keep quiet, and NOT get involved in personal slanging matches. THAT is not the way to resolve disagreements as we all know. No one wins. noooo:
Now i really really really do NOT want to fall out with ANYONE in here, as I had more than a belly full of that elsewhere as many of you will know, but i do sometimes feel quite intimidated, and without wishing to sound overly sensitive, wounded by the apparent ( to me ) stigma that i feel is sometimes placed upon me due to my admitted lower (than most of you) educational background, and apparent bad temper and impatience towards others.
You'd really have to meet me to appreciate that whilst some of this is in fact true, especially the lower than average educational background...many reasons for that as previously documented in other threads ...that i'm not actually that thick in reality, and i'd like to think that those that have met me in person will confirm that you don't actually see the real me on a forum, merely an impression, just like we all have in our own minds what each of us are like.
It has turned into a bit of 'chums' club imho, and i think the suggestion of having a seperate board for the more serious stuff could well be a good idea.
Certainly worth a try for the sake of pressing a few buttons.
No one surely wants to see anyone leave the pub simply beacause of cliquiness, and that includes Shy Talk.
Have i made any sense here? rubschin:

Yes you make perfect sense.
We at admin have spent weeks discussing this ... the problem is too few posters which leads to the few who make most posts getting close and sparking off one another ~ and that can be a turn off to some. But without the frivolity and silliness there would be very few posts.
Frankly I doubt that your education was any worse than mine and certainly nobody here thinks poorly of you, if they do they have never said so to me.
Yes some like to put down anyone who makes a typing error or misuses grammar but that happens on most sites and the cracks at Scousers are made everywhere,as indeed are those about the Welsh, Irish and Scots for that matter.
Shy Talk has decided he doesn't want to play here anymore and I respect his wishes in that.
So the problem is too few members.
Ideas as to how we attract more is the question we need to address.
Should we advertise? If so Where & How? Who should be our target?
Should we wait for organic growth (ie let it happen over time)
Should we do what we have tried not to do and over moderate to keep every thread on topic?
Frankly we are in the hands of the posters ~ what you all post is what decides the direction we go in.
You can all see the stats ... we have a lot of posts from a very small membership and some members who never post.
A few stand out as prolific topic starters and prolific posters but they can't carry the whole thing.
Input is what we need if we are to grow the site into something we can all enjoy.
Now there are enough "rooms" for everyone to be as serious or as silly as they wish but we shall need to stop navel gazing and get on with it.

I really haven't got a problem with the scouser jokes anymore tbh.
I used to get a bit pissed off with the constant 'wise cracks', as i couldn't quite work out if they were sometimes being said with intent or not. I think generally it's mainly banter though.
Usual forum problem i guess, trying to guess what is REALLY being meant. ::)

The creators of ‘The Pub’ set it up and provide the facility free of charge to anybody that wants to make a positive contribution to the board. Therefore, the members decide the content and direction – quite frankly, if we don’t like it we only have ourselves to blame.
Personally, I’m very happy with the site so far although it is early days and I believe it is important for us to continue to grow the membership. Over forty thousands posts (albeit many of them my own) point towards some satisfaction with the board.
We are more than willing (and to a certain degree, able) to add more sections, elements or features to the site if anybody thinks something is missing.

However, I question your motives in posting an attack on the board and then removing yourself from it. Clearly, you don’t have an interest in joining us to grow the board and make it a success which is a shame and reflects very poorly on you.

Not sure I agree or disagree with any of this. Typical of a real pub although people may be inclined to go further with their comments than they would in real life. I enjoy the banter and discussions as it doesn't get too serious etc.
As far as education etc is concerned I am no better or worse than anybody else on here. We all have our virtues and vices.
In real life, I socialise with a mixed bag of people, different ages, different backgrounds, different jobs, different education - diversity is the spice of life.
Getting too serious is a waste of time.

As for my education, I may be a Cheam girl now, but I was educated abroad by teachers who were more interested in the bar down the road and the sun outside than they were in earning their salaries.

Sounds like some of the priests that taught me, but they were actually interested in your education as well.
Just happened to be talking to on eof the secs here about children etc - she commented about St Philomenas having the most un-sexy school uniform of any school in the area - have to agree, but it's always been like that, perhaps the nuns designed it.

Attractive may be a beeter choice of word, but it would take a life-time to customise this uniform to make it in any way attractive. It's been the same for as long as I can remember (my sister went there by the way). Long "heavy woolen" plaid skirt, football socks (usually around ankles), baggy jumpers and blazers, same in summer and winter.
When you see the other school uniforms the difference is amazing, from trousers being allowed to skirts that are no wider than belts.

It's quite amazing to see them dressed in something other than that uniform - I did got out with one or two them and was at primary school with quite a few of them.
Am actually meeting some of them tomorrow night at my sisters birthday do. Wouldn't mind seeing them in uniform but not St Phils

Would you have gone to school in such a unform? (How do parents manage it?)
Would you be happy for your child to go to school wearing that uniform?

There is a local school to us ~ also Catholic/Private/Grant Aided and all the other stuff, that has a similar uniform. It has something to do with TRADITION ~ in other words it hasn't actually seen any need to change for the past fifty years. In the 1950s when I was at school all girls looked like that and all boys wore grey flannel shorts until they were 14.
Yes some parents make the choice on religious grounds, some for the "Values" that the "Tradition" indicates to them and some just to be different but the kids seem to survive despite all.
Oh and School uniforms serve two purposes. They create a "corporate identity" with which the children can and do bond and they prevent any "My clothes are more fashionable than yours" bullying.
