Gave me many a chuckle over the last 40 years. Not a "comedian" as such but knew where to find the funny bone. A very witty man who will be missed.
-
He was an excellent female impersonator too. He played Moneypenny in the early Bond films. Amazing!
-
never heard of him either

I expect you may have heard of "That Was The Week That Was" ~ He invented it. ::)

But of course you knew that and were just kidding! Silly bear!

OK.
I'll admit to being a fully paid up Phillistine then, since I can not see any relevance here between Matthew Arnold and Ned Sherrin.
Or are you suggesting that they are one and the same person?
The only 'Arnold' that I can recall is my maths master at grammar school! And a right twat he was too!

Philistinism is a derogatory term used to describe a particular attitude or set of values. A person called a Philistine (in the relevant sense), is said to despise or undervalue art, beauty, intellectual content, and/or spiritual values. Philistines are also said to be materialistic, to favor conventional social values unthinkingly, and to favor forms of art that have a cheap and easy appeal (e.g. kitsch).
Philistinism affords a contrast to Bohemianism, as the character of a smugly conventional bourgeois social group perceived to lack all the desirably soulful 'bohemian' characteristics, especially an artistic temperament and a broad cultural horizon open to the avant-garde. To the chosen few, the 'Philistines' embodied a smug, anti-intellectual threatening majority, in the 'culture wars' of the 19th century.

noooo:
Nick, are you being deliberately obtuse?
I was not requesting a definition of a Philistine, but rather what the relevance of Matthew Arnold has in regard of Ned Sherin.
Care to enlighten me?

I was referring to those who had not heard of him.
OK?
I assume they follow BoyZone or somesuch noooo:

Don't diss the Zone. evil:

Hadn't heard of who?
Ned Sherrin - heard of him, radio a few times I think plus I was familiar with his TWTWTW stuff - my era
Matthew Arnold - never heard of him. Who the feck was he, and why was he important, and, more importantly, what, if any, is his link to Ned Sherrin? (so many commas in one sentence confused:)
P.S. I have a vague recollection of having heard of BoyZone - some kind of kids band weren't they?

OK, so I read it the first time you posted it - still can't see any relevance to Ned Sherrin, though the Wiki entry does contain this gem:
"Philistines", a word which derives its modern cultural meaning (in English - the German-language usage was well established) from him.
Is that what you are alluding to? If so, wouldn't it have been easier to just say so?

I can't stand it when that happens ::)
It's like the "Levi's ad. music" ... no it's not. It's a sarabande by Handel. Besides, anybody who's anybody knows Handel wrote it for Kubrick's Barry Lyndon ;)
