Title: Why is Menzies pronounced Ming?
Post by: Nick on September 20, 2007, 09:47:26 AM
It's about the most annoying thing about the pointless LibDem conference.

It's Menzies, pronounced MENZIES

And where are the Cheeky Girls?

Ming is short for the Scottish way of pronouncing his name which is "Mingus".
Rather like in England Cholmondely is pronounced Chumley.

I'm not saying it is right ~ just explaining the how and why ~ with examples.Banghead

Accept the value of the information and do not started nitpicking because you don't like the facts. ::)

We can't all have what we want in this life you know (Wags finger and frowns in stern fashion)

More Scottish Names and how to pronounce them:
Farquhar is pronounced Farker
Dalziel is pronounced Deeyell
Smellie is pronounced Smiley
Chrichton is pronounced Cryton

And that is just from Mrs Snoopy's class mates.

No she is not Scottish ~ just went to school there (with Nick Nairn ..... who often set fire to things and still does)

Based on my knowledge of you two it does seem to be a "Nick" thing.
I am told Nick Nairn once set fire to a classmate's blazer ~ the classmate was the head's son. ::)

This applies in English too. I have work "colleagues" with names like "Stephen, Neil, Robin, Louise, Nikki, Natalie, Sarah" and so forth yet I just pronounce them "Useless Cunt"... Banghead

I vaguely remember the old BBCs. But in general pretty much whenever I've used a computer it has had a mouse.

My Dad used to be an engineer when they first started. He used to crawl around them and replace valves and stuff. My Mum was an operator for them, ticker tape etc.

When we first got a desktop they couldn't quite get their heads round the fact that we owned something more powerful and smaller than anything they had ever worked on.

I bought as 750Gbyte hard drive today?

When I first started the biggest hard disk we sold was 5Mbytes ? it had to be formatted as four 1.2Mbyte drives to emulate an 8? floppy.

The first ?PC? I sold was a NEC Advanced PC which was based on twin 8? floppy drives.

Prior to that I sold some specialised HP systems with a huge 16K of RAM

Punched tape - great until it broke and you had to use special sticky things to repair them. Good fun to throw around afterwars providing no-one wanted it.

Ever heard of chad?

And in 1963 I was one of the first batch of RAF personnel to be trained in the use of their new computerised stores accounting systems. Volumes of handwritten forms to fill out that then were used to prepare Punched cards which in turn produced Punched tapes which were stored on vast reels that were then connected to a teleprinter. We then dialled (note dialled as in old style telephone not push button) the magic number on the teleprinter which connected us to the main computer which was housed in two aircraft hangers (I cannot say where ~ Official secrets Act etc). Once connected the teleprinter reeled these huge tapes round and transmitted the data (holes) to the main computer. Thus all RAF Stations, world wide fed in details of their daily stores usage of everything from fuel, via aircraft spares, ammunition, bombs though to cap badges, buttons and toilet paper to the central accounts. Requests for replacements were sent the same way. Each station had a specific time slot in which to do this operation daily.
I saw "The Computer" (as it was known). It really did fill two aircraft hangers and yes it was all glowing valves and whirling discs of paper tape. 44 years on and I can sit here using a tiny lap-top and talk rubbish to you all.
Ain't it wunnerful? cloud9:

I do like Nick Nairn.  Probably the only Ready Steady Cook worth watching was when he got everything wrong and ended up accidentally breaking a wine glass over the meal he had managed to produce.

Nice oatcakes too  cool20:

When my son was born I was 21 ~ a whole life time older than him. When he was 21 I was 42 .... exactly twice his age. I told him this on his 21st. "Do you realise?" I said, jokingly, "that from now on you will be catching me up at an even faster rate. Never again will I be twice as old as you".  He couldn't work that one out.
