Title: The all new "Gee I never saw this coming" thread
Post by: Grumpmeister on July 27, 2025, 10:17:16 PM
So the new internet safety bill is now in effect and it's immediately led to a bumper crop of new customers for VPN service providers. I'm sure that none of us saw that coming......no nobody.....nobody at all.   facepalm:

Quote from: Financial Times
Proton, the Swiss-based company behind the top VPN app, said it had experienced a more than 1,800 per cent increase in daily sign-ups from UK-based users after new age verification rules took effect on Friday.

Nord said there had been a 1,000 per cent increase in UK purchases of VPN subscriptions since before the rules took effect.

Quite

And there's also borrowing the credit card of Mum or Dad to defeat the ID check

The intentions were good but the plan was shite

Unfortunately, it is clear that the current crop of pollies are utterly useless...  noooo:

Few of them have any idea of business or life in general having travelled a cotton wool buffered life from school to uni (PPE obvs.) then straight into politics.

They have the ridiculous, unwavering belief that if you make something 'a law' then that thing will happen. They simply don't understand consequences, options or incentives.

This is just the most recent example...  ::)

Nah it's the age old unequal struggle problem.

Essentially only one person can design a system but it immediately faces a million people trying to find ways to defeat it.

And to be fair the aim of this legislation wasn't to stop adults viewing porn whether by direct or VPN access, the intent was to stop 8 year olds seeing it.  Probably need to place restrictions on VPN providers giving free geo displacing services.

How ironic that the maker of that video is making a false statement.  Just read the paragraph he linked to https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2023/50/section/179

'(c)at the time of sending it, the person intended the message, or the information in it, to cause non-trivial psychological or physical harm to a likely audience, and

(d)the person has no reasonable excuse for sending the message.'

Forever

But allowing 8 year old children use them to watch violent porn really needs to be addressed somehow.

It was.

Farage is incandescent because he and his mob have said they'll repeal the whole of the legislation and it was of course pointed out that would be just what the Savilles of this world would want.

We'll re-visit your assertion that it is all about protecting the kiddies in six months...  ::)

Who said it was all about protecting children.  Not the authors or movers of the Act.

But Farage and mob say they want to repeal it all incl the sections protecting children.  Now they're upset that people are asking them to own such a shit proposal.

The government has said exactly that...

...and it seems to be your opinion too...?  rubschin:

So waht was 'the intention' if not to stop kiddies watching porn...?

So I should have said that piece of the legislation but frankly I thought that was obvious.

Farage and mob say they will repeal every single part of it incl the parts protecting children, as one of their first acts on taking office.  Inane and classic simpleton's throw baby out with bathwater approach to problems.

It is a terrible act like so much introduced by our incompetent politicians of late. Reform are right to oppose it in full...

As I mentioned earlier, we'll see what the act is really about (spoiler: not protecting kiddies) in the next six months or so...

So you agree Farage is committed to remove laws that protect children from on line sexual exploitation and bullying without any plan on how to restore that protection.

Nice try... ::)

Reform, along with many other political commentators (Kemi Badenoch being one such) are strongly opposed to the bill as they believe it will restrict freedom of speech in the UK and do nothing to protect the kiddies...

Presumably comments you don't hear on the BBC?

However, I'm not prepared to get into a prolonged, circular argument with you over it. ::)

I'm locking the thread. We can revisit in six months or so and see if the bill really has protected kiddies or censored free speech, allowing the government to clamp down on criticism of its policies by adults.  ;)
