Title: Colin McRae.No. My hero is dead
Post by: GROWLER on September 15, 2007, 10:49:19 PM
I'm feeling very very sad. My all time favourite rally driver. Britain has lost one of it's greatest, and his young son perished too.

Spent many many happy hours in the forests of the UK watching his sometimes unbelievable driving technique. A true and totally commited sportsman. The sport will miss him greatly, as will all his loyal followers that have derived so much enjoyment in following his career leading up to his famous world rally champion victory in the Subaru Impreza in 1995.

I was there in Penmachno forest on the last stage of Lombard RAC rally as he drove to the stage finish as the newly crowned World Champion.
The crowd were roaring their approval and congratulations as he slid past us all.
An unforgetable moment for me and many others too I guess.

He competed in a highly dangerous sport, and came so close to losing his life in a horrendous accident in Corsica...1999 I think.
Seems tragically ironic that he ends up losing his life at the controls of a helicopter just 1 mile from his home wife and daughter.

RIP fellah, and thanks for the memories.
