Title: Registrars - time to modernise
Post by: Miss Demeanour on September 28, 2020, 05:50:03 PM
So me and The Man had to go to out local registration office today for an appointment to do this Notice to Marry nonsense and pay £70 for the privilege  noooo:

So after we have to be interviewed individually to confirm this is not a sham marriage or part of a modern day slavery ring ( although I'm sure The Man was tempted to whisper "help me" in his interview   lol: )   we have to go through this nonsense of confirming my fathers details and occupation  noooo:

My biological father has been gone for many , many years and to be honest I hardly knew him. It was my mother that bought me up and I really resent the fact that his name would be put on any future certificates because it is on my birth certificate.

How does this process remain unchanged when the government has to ensure equality and inclusion in all practices ( allegedly )?  Surely there should at least be a choice  that not  only potentially includes mothers but step parents , adoptive parents etc. This should have been amended at the same time as civil partnerships etc were introduced  rubschin:

I had queued up for so long that I bought some stamps.

Furthermore, the late Mrs Nick being Catholic we had to see a priest. He asked if I had been christened. When I said I couldn't recall, he said he needed evidence and that a note from my mum would do! I was 40. My mum sent a confirmatory note and I put it in my back pocket. It got sort of curved. She insisted on ironing it flat for the priest!! That should have been a warning  noooo:

And don't talk to me about "Catholic Marriage Preparation". The contraceptives bit was "interesting". noooo:

Did you also have to confess your sins ? Could you book the booth for the weekend in those days ?

You'd think a government that (rightly imho) believes marriage is good for society would make it accessible and affordable.  But no, all that guff would challenge some of our lesser brained and that £70 would be hard for some to find
