Title: Mr Nick's new car
Post by: Nick on June 07, 2014, 02:52:25 PM
The Focus TDCi is feeling the strain of the daily commute and may expire in the New Year. Last MOT picked up early evidence of corrosion (including brake pipes  scared2:) I was planning to replace him in Jan anyhoo.

Mr Focus has been excellent   Economical, reliable (apart from the small fire) and whizzy on the motorway.

He has 5 doors which I don't really need as he and I are generally alone together, but I don't want to downsize to some little car.  rubschin:

A Golf appeals, I had one a few years ago, and I like the look of the Honda Civic. Big Sis's petrol Civic drinks petrol like Miss D at the voddy noooo: though, so would have to be diesel.

So, prolly diesel, roomy to fit me in, reliable, enough toys but not so many that they go wrong all the time, handy for local trips and longer runs, and not silly money.

I keep my cars a long time and as I am 60 in Jan  sad24: I reckon this one will see me out

Any suggestions??

Yep everybody rates Ford Focuses (is that Foci?) but if you want the same chassis but different body in a used car try the Mazda 3 (although sadly since 2013 they seem to have dropped the wonderfully bonkers MPS engine option and also the Ford chassis)

2 or 3 swing door cars are imho awful and should be banned from sale in the UK.  There is not enough room to open the doors so they are always being banged against other cars.  Their owners should pay doubled if not trebled road tax and then lightly shot.

Skodas are no longer a joke, some of the rental ones I've driven have been excellent.

I like diesels  evil:

Then you are guilty of manslaughter. Diesel particulates are proven carcinogens and are probably responsible for more lung cancers than are blamed on smoking. But it is easier and less problematic to blame fags than to address the problems that would arise from sorting out all the heavy machinery/lorries/buses etc. that are diesel.

Remember all those Beagles that were forced to smoke 10's of thousands of fags to study lung cancer? Not one of them developed it. Not one. Then they realised the hounds were all breathing laboratory purified air, so they changed the supply to take in the air from the busy A road nearby and guess what...

In all seriousness, they are bloody good cars and 100,000 mile/7 year warranty. Ideal for a ginger mongulant with hints of poofery

Jim may be reprieved  cloud9: He still has lots of life in him, but it was the corrosion (esp of his brake pipes  eeek:) that was troubling me. It seems repairs will not be expensive  cloud9: cloud9:  He is going in for a proper check up in a couple of weeks and then we shall see.

He was suffering from corroded brake pipes. Replacement cost (inc labour) is £162  cloud9: cloud9:

Jim is a diesel and has only done 110000 miles. Garage owner has same model and same age and says he aims to keep his for another 10 years.  cloud9: cloud9:  He calls Jim Jim now too  cloud9: I think he secretly loves Jim too  cloud9:

He is booked in for day surgery on March 3rd.

Only other fault was a split wiper blade  cloud9:

A mate of mine runs an M.O.T. station in Blighty. He has a roll of wiper blade rubber.

"Every fool that comes here gets new wiper blades, they cost me about 10 pence per blade....that pays for my apartment and air fares to Cyprus."
