How many friends did I used to lose through family pets?
Take say, "Would you care to join us for dinner on Saturday night?" and then, in a rather diffident voice, "Would you mind if I asked you not to bring Butch." (Butch used to be my beloved old Stafford, without whom I was rarely seen, no matter what the occasion.
Usually met with a polite acceptance but inward seething and a mental resolve to finish my friendship with such unfeeling bastards at the earliest opportunity.
This is only one representative instance, but their were other occasions when I have permitted my love for my dogs to influence my choice of human companions. My usual excuse being, that my dogs were well mannered thoroubreds who had been trained to behave well in all situations.
After living petless for some time, through force of circumstances, I have often wondered if my attitude was quite unreasonable, since I hear myself saying, "How about coming over for a drink on Friday, if you can find someone to take care of Buster or Fido or Spot".

Normal people have a regard for pets that usually placed them on a family level.
As with other family members they tend to impress their better points on you and enjoy a level of tolerance with their failings.
We are used to our pets, and they are used to us, it is a cosy relationship usually and we do expect others to share our blindness to faults in our pets (kids as well if truth is told) and we are upset that others reject what we hold so dear.
Just as many peoples kids are unwelcome but, by and large, friends are more careful to be sensitive in the rejection of others children.
There is nothing wrong with either attitude except for people being unable to accept that there is another point of view.
