Possibly a stupid question but if the phones are ringing then they have a signal so how come they aren't using multilateration to at least narrow down the search area. rubschin:

I thought that ......and also which fecking smart phone has a battery that lasts 3 days.... rubschin:
-
You can buy unofficial batteries with far larger capacity but they aren't recommended by the manufacturers. I had one for my XDA a few years ago which would last 3-4 days at a push.

Even at 60 fathoms?

If the phones are still ringing that suggests the plane most likely went down over land or extremely shallow water as the radio frequencies used for mobile telecoms can't penetrate it. They would need to be VLF or ELF to manage that.

No...
The ring tone is not generated by the phone - but by the last base station that it 'camped on' to....
So if you smashed your phone to pieces right now there is still a good chance that I could get a ring tone if I dialled it....
It sort of depends on the phone system and software in place....
Just in the same way that if we get a power cut here and all our phones go off (land-lines) you'll still get a ring-tone from the exchange....
-
Did the plane ever take off ? rubschin:

Just in the same way that if we get a power cut here and all our phones go off (land-lines) you'll still get a ring-tone from the exchange....
If you have a real phone, it will actually ring when the mains is off, because the power to ring the bell comes from batteries at the exchange.
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theoldtelephone.co.uk%2Fimages%2FCandlestick%2F150_daff_facing_rt.jpg&hash=2d4b29f5b58de53ee5444299371fd2dd0bc558ea)
Only your fancy cordless phones and the like will stop working, but the exchange will still give ringing tone to the caller.

I know a bit (not a great deal, mind) about planes and stuff.
The Boeing 777 (be it a 200 series or 300 series, or any derivations thereof) is a pretty pukka bit of kit. It definitely took off and was tracked up until a certain point, when it went invisible. FlightRadar24 can probably replay some of the journey (I haven't checked).
What happened must have been catastropic - therories about a gradual loss of cabin pressure are unrealistic as there are so many sensors that set off BIG alarms that they would would have been impossible to ignore. I think some planes in these curcumstances will automatically reduce height to about 15000ft and switch their Squawk to 7700 (emergency) as well. This would have been picked up easily. And a loss of cabin pressure would not have turned the tracking device off - this can only be done manually or if it gets broken. If not turned off manually then it must have been broken by something; be it a bomb, complete disintegration due to a massive and sudden structural failure.
Talk that it may have flown on for hours are unlikely as it would only be carrying enough fuel for its scheduled stop plus 2 emergency sectors thereafter. Fuel is expensive - 1/3 of the cost of the flight - it wouldn't have been carrying any more than it needed to as more take-off weight=bigger fuel burn=more money=inefficiency.
So....I think it must have completely broken to smithereens at 35,000ft. It would explain why no bits have been found as they would have scattered far and wide and sunk within hours and/or too dispersed to make finding them realistic.
Bomb or bad construction? Boeing had better hope for the former. In fact I'm sure Boeing will have a big say in making sure it's the former, evidenced or not.

The BBC are reporting that the plane was still sending signals over 5 hours after it "went missing" and that it could have covered 1, 000 miles. Seeing at it would have been doing about 550mph, I make that 2, 750 miles. I'm sure BM can explain. ..

They are now saying that the plane flew on for 7 hours. Which means it has 8 hours of fuel onboard for a 5 1/2 hour flight. Either Malaysian Airlines have money to burn, or this was a well planned abduction. The re-feuller should have questioned a request that was excessive. At least, they do in Gatwick.

I am starting to believe this was a very well executed abduction with the flight crew involved. And forget all that bollocks you might read about the plane needing a 5000ft runway to land - I've seen them do it in half that if they've needed to. Curiouser and curiouser...

A pilot on another forum agrees with you too....but he thinks he screwed up the landing ....
-
I have some grave misgivings here - we know the muzzies would dearly like to destroy Uncle Sam and, since 9/11 would have serious difficulty getting to repeat it or anything similar.
Now, given that any plane getting near a city would, in all probability get shot down before it could do any damage, what would be the scenario if a nucular(sic) device were on said plane?
Shoot it down and it goes (very big) bang. So long New York . . . .
They reckon that the info to make a nuke are available via the interweb - all thay need is some fissionable material . . .
I really hope I'm wrong . . . . .
-

Runway length is dependent on a number of factors - largely load but also altitude and wind speed....
I can't help but think that even with all the fuel burnt (do we know how much cargo was being carried?) you are still looking at a very long paved runway and favourable winds to be able to get it down and (presumably) re-sue it again without major maintenance...
Plus of course, the aforementioned mile-long runway would need to be somewhere that nobody would notice a treble-seven landing and that had no mobile phone coverage (unless all the passengers had been murdered during the flight).....
-
5000 feet is mentioned as it is the way for planes to land and still abide by noise restrictions in built up areas. On full brakes and reverse thrust these things can land in an incredibly short distance. Wind direction is irrelevant to an extent as you would just go around and make sure you were heading into the wind if would make that much of a difference.

Well....
The runway can obviously only offer approaches in two directions - commonly 25/07.... so for the minimum landing the wind would have to be from one of those two - any crosswind component would make a significant difference....as would temperature, load, a wet runway, etc.
