Title: Fanatical Anti-Smokers...
Post by: Barman on May 04, 2013, 07:11:48 AM
...can even turn a discussion about UKIP into a smoking rant...

Quote from: Jonathan Mason
“I want to enjoy a cigarette in peace without being treated like a child or a criminal…”

I have no objection to that as long as it is not within 30 feet of me, indoors or outdoors, because the smell of cigarette smoke, or the smell of someone who has been smoking recently in the same room immediately gives me sinus inflammation and a lot of mucus, which is unpleasant.

Unfortunately the vast majority of people who smoke are quite inconsiderate of others. For example, in the hospital I worked at in the US smoking was forbidden on grounds, and yet some staff would go off grounds on their coffee or lunch break and smoke in their cars, and come back reeking of smoke, which was very unpleasant for the patients they were working with, not to mention other staff who had to be in the same space or office.

Hence, although there are no doubt some clean smokers who bathe and change their clothing before going into public places, most don’t and so we end up with laws that may seem unnecessarily stringent. Having said that I personally IMMEDIATELY notice the difference in air quality between deplaning in a Florida airport where smoking is forbidden and landing at Atlanta airport which reeks of smoke which hits you as soon as you take your first breath. I make a point of avoiding connections there.

Where I live in the Dominican Republic smoking is forbidden in airports and enclosed indoor restaurants, but allowed in restaurants which are “open air” which actually covers nearly all the restaurants and can make for unpleasant dining. What I have found works best is to check if there is anyone smoking there before sitting down, or if there is see if there is a table available upwind. If that fails, it is best to go elsewhere or else get a takeaway.

I don’t know what the best solution is as it is almost impossible to allow people to “enjoy a cigarette in peace” in a public place without annoying someone else. Of course people should be allowed to light up in their own homes if there are no children present, and presumably in open spaces, because if there is no one else sharing the same air, then there will be no one to complain. Conscientious smokers will, off course, take their butts home with them along with the cigarette packets, cellophane, silver paper, used matches, etc. and dispose of them in airtight containers for the convenience of garbage collection employees. I see no need to have a requirement to collect the ash from an open place such as a field or a beach.

I love the idea of getting off a plane and the first thing you notice is not the stench of aviation fuel, nor the fumes from all the taxis at the rank or any of the other thousands of vehicles moving around the airport.... but the smell of a little leaf being burnt....  lol: lol: lol:

I also love the idea of the bin men emptying the filth and detritus of society into the back of the truck with that overwhelming smell that it has...  sick2:

And then one of the binners retching because somebody has put a dog-end in the trash without sealing it in an air-tight container! happy001

All werk comes to a halt, JOM turns up and deploys 'Bio Hazard' signs and tapes the area off until an specially trained operative in a space suit turns up and removes the fag end with a long pole with jaws on the end....

I've gone too far haven't I...?  rubschin:

The smoking ban is great. The laws will just get stricter. New Zealand to completely ban smoking by 2025, university campuses all across america banning smoking (even outdoors), new laws in place in europe.

millions of doctors and scientists around the world can’t be wrong. This blog (and it’s readers) are delusional to think for ONE MINUTE they are smarter than doctors/scientists majority opinion globally.

Can’t wait for you all to die off.

And there you have the health-driven anti-smoking campaign in a nutshell!  noooo:

I wnet out for a fag last night and met a wumman who was also rather furtively smoking. I asked her if she was there for an award.

I probably only smoke about 10 per day now though.

Never smoked, never wanted to.
Hate the smell.
Saddler smokes but does so in the dining room with the back door open (bless him).
I have never been a rabid anti smoker, my feeling is it's your life to do with as you choose.

About 3 weeks ago I was in the pub nearest to my place, a couple on the outside table next to me started spluttering. They got up and moved while mumbling something. The next day the same happened but I managed to hear the chap say "We don't want to get cancer!". Over the last couple of weeks they have managed to come out with the same statement each day.

Today I pointed out that if they go inside it is a nonsmoking area and they will have no problem (it is stifling in there, landlord too tight to put on the air-con), she would not have it.  noooo: I pointed out that I have to go outside in all weathers to have a ciggy and she cannot have her cake and eat it as there are designated areas for the full 12 months and I have to put up with the weather no matter what. The owld bag got up and went.  Thumbs:

We need them to say themselves really

I can't believe I'm the only one that's been a serious smoker and then given it up

But the real puzzler is why such a preponderance of smokers at the VP.

I am a long-past ex-smoker. Cheroots and pipe mainly.

Nowadays I am tolerant of those who still choose to smoke, but I dislike anyone doing it nearby while I am eating.

Change the table Steve. I have given up.  Thumbs:

I gave up a few years ago for 18 months, then started at the end of my divorce.  cussing:
Kept going for a while as I was pissed off, but thought I will do it soon (how long is a piece of string?).
Only since mid-week, but got the same mind set as when I gave up before and not even been craving for a ciggy since. I used to get through between 40 to 50 per day (20 less than Apey) so not to even worry about lighting up I would think you can change my status.  Thumbs:

Can someone explain the logic here, banning small packs of tobacco and packs of 10 cigarettes isn't going to cut down smoking. All I can see happen is that either people are going to buy the next size up instead or they are going to get cheaper stuff from a 'mate down the pub' instead.  noooo:

It's classic bollocks thinking ignoring the law of unintended consequences.  Yes it may deter some poorer esp younger people from buying cigarettes but as you pointed out it will also inevitably mean some will buy and smoke 20 when they would have just gone for 10

The first recourse of failed leaders is control, they're losing the battle to lead behaviour by information and persuasion and in their minds that must not be allowed to stand so more controls must be imposed.

Not to mention health risks, if you end up buying 200 B&H from Dodgy Dave down the pub you haven't really got any way of knowing if what you have bought is the real thing or a cheaper knock off that could be filled with any old shite.

Yep people went to a lot of trouble to retain in the Lisbon treaty the supremacy of the UK parliament  for UK matters and that shabby little cow decides to just misuse it.

I believe the proposed directive will still have to get parliamentary approval but that doesn't mean a full Act.

Loads of articles supporting it.  A lass I once worked with who spent a year in Korea told me it was true.  This article is a Korean article showing how proud some are there about it:

http://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=001&oid=081&aid=0000006956& (http://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=001&oid=081&aid=0000006956&)

You'll need a Korean to English translation engine.  Google chrome should offer it automatically

Meanwhile back at smoking . . . .

Smoking is an easy target to make it look as if the government is working towards improving the health of the nation and the instead of actually tackling the problems that the NHS has: poor staffing levels, inefficient and wasteful management and morale so low that it's sunning itself on Ayre's Rock

There may be an easy and cheap way to protest that law that will possibly drive the establishment nuts. You can still buy those kids candy cigs in the retro sweet shops and seeing as the law can only work if drivers are seen or pictured with a cigarette in their mouth. So if enough people were pulled over for 'smoking' the sweet the media would have a field day no matter where they stand on the issue.  rubschin:

The Ozzies manage to make it enforceable, been the law in most states there for years.

And shoot the messenger if you like but this is one anti smoking law I support, kids just don't get a chance to say no to being smoked at in cars and the science says it is a health risk to them.

Should be balanced by repealing the idiot laws that says someone alone in his/her company car can't smoke and in pubs with smoke extraction systems.

Ban all children from cars.   Make them walk. It will cut child obesity and accidents caused by them distracting the driver.

The only downside is that they will instead breathe the carcinogenic diesel fumes that are concentrated by the roadside and are far, far worse.

But there is no evidence that 'second hand smoke' is harmful....

My dad smoked all the time - including in the car - and it didn't do me any harm...

Kids don't get a chance to say 'no' to loads of things - quite right, they are kids....

Indeed.  There's scant evidence that smoking causes lung cancer either.  It probably can cause emphasymia,  but not lung cancer. Remember the "smoking Beagles"...?

I got a call from my mate, the one that his mother died the other week, so met him in the pub down the road. I was using my e-cig when some cow who is somewhat large in the 'toilet department' looked across then began to sneeze. Her 'knob' partner shouted out "Are you okay babe?" ....hardly a babe, they surely cannot make pampers that large! Her reply "There is nicotine in the air and it is killing me!"

Twenty minutes later my friend goes over to her, she werks at the hospice, and offers her his huge amount of medicine (for free) his mother left in the house after she croaked. "That is great! The hospice will welcome all of those meds, but I can't go there for a week or so because I have a streaming cold. I will pick them up next week." Of course it was my e-cig that caused her to sneeze.  char048

I asked him the other day how he was coping - His reply " Fine as long as no one mentions it"
Pity we don't have a zipped mouth emoticon.
