Title: RIP Snoopy
Post by: Nick on May 02, 2013, 08:09:18 AM
Alison tells me he died of a massive heart attack at 7 this morning. I shall call her soon and will, of course, attend his funeral. Anyone who wants further details can PM me.

It is terribly sad especially for Alison and the three kids.

That is so sad - what can you say . . .

I'll miss him - had lots of good banter over the years - he always talked sense - at least on the interweb. I was, sadly, never fortunate enough to meet him in the flesh, but from what I've heard, he was exactly as advertised!

One of his last posts .............

"Life is too short to even think about entering a supermarket ~ In fact life is too short for shopping. If they don't do it on line and deliver I don't want to know.
I never leave the house without cash sufficient for my immediate needs and only use cards to buy petrol and such when I am out "

No. I'm not in floods, but I'm still very sad to see the demise of the grizzly old goat.

As said elsewhere, I had a few 'rumblings' with him as I'm a bit of a narkey get (apparently  whistle:), but the waters had become significantly smoother in the recent past.

I did actually meet him and his family 4 years ago at the doghouse, and I must say I was well looked after, fed, watered and made most welcome.

I'll miss you you grumbly owld dog.

From playing in the kennel

The elder of my two boys is learning to play the cornet (the younger is learning the clarinet) ~ they are both members of a local marching Silver Band.
Minor has just been practising all his exercises and again this evening he has finished with one that the Band do not play as he has been asked if, next year, he will take over duties hitherto performed by a member of the British Legion at our village war memorial on Remembrance Day ~ The old boy says he cannot go on and there is no-one else so Minimus is determined to be perfect at playing it. He practises this every evening and it take me back so far ........ It often brings tears to my eyes as the 12 year old gives it his all. He is nearly there but he says "I have to be perfect to do it".
I know I shall weep buckets when he does it for real.
Many passers by pause outside our house when he plays it.

I know I haven't been around much but I am gutted and crying.

When I was rather aimless he was such a help. He always used to give me the sort of advice my Dad would have if he'd been here. Such a fantastic man and I am beyond sorry for Alison and the kids.

Going to go and give my boy a cuddle and have a quiet weep. Beer tonight at sunset for the chap.

Just had a long call with Alison. I was crying. Funeral will be in Rhos on Sea after May 14th. Donations to British Heart Foundation.

Boys are devastated, THW (Amy) on way home. She is going ahead with the house sale.

She is brave and adrenalinised.

Told her to eat and look after the kids

I will be speaking to her again. Too upset to tell you the rest at present

Dear All,

From a very absent Landlady I would just like to say that we (me and him) are truly devastated and saddened to learn of Snoopy's passing this morning.

In times when I was a more regular participant of the pub banter my memories of Snoopy are  that you could always rely on him to turn the topic into some form of cheeky banter  ;D Most times insisting on being patted and having his tummy rubbed, or slipped a crisp or two under the table - which is the right of every much loved loyal pub hound!!!!

He will truly and sincerely be very much missed.

My personal sympathies go out to not only his family, but also all his pub friends who will, I am sure, raise a glass to him tonight.

God bless all and well done Mr. Nick for being the liaison from all his friends here to Alison and the family.

Much love
Lyn (aka Landlady) xx

Wow, that first thread. Has it really been that long since we all came here?

I think the overwhelming theme here is the support he gave so many of us "behind the scenes". Ive spent a lovely time today looking through all the old pms he sent me. In law, marriage, pregnancy, child, work advice. Incredible.

My Dad died when I was 21 and I still feel such utter saddness that he never got to know me as an adult. He and I had a similar relationship to Snoops and his daughter.  So sad that they'll never get to move beyond that.

I'm rambling now. Sleep deprevation and two bottles of San Miguel will do that to a girl. I only drink that at sunset to remember very special people and Snoops was absolutely one of those.

Well said Wenchie, he was a real rock to lots of people and his legacy must touch so many lives.
Time for another malty drink in his honour.  cry:

Good plan.

Meanwhile, just got back from up 'me 'ill' and as usual, I surveyed the surrounding beauty from up there.
I've often used to look down towards where he lived and wondered what the wiley owld buzzard was up too whilst standing up there freezin' me tits off. rubschin:

It was actually quite sad doing that tonight, but as I was alone up there, ( I THINK  scared2: ) I did say 'ELLO to him out loud like.
Hope he piggin' eard me and not anyone else like. redface:

It'll be with a pang of sadness now when I meander up there, thinking like I did tonight, that I never did manage to accompany the grumpy owld fart  cloud9: up there in the off roading wheel chair buggy thing that I suggested he purchased several times. cry:

I have to agree. Only a month or so ago I asked his opinion on the Royal Holloway University where his daughter is studying as my daughter had gone down there for a look see. His reply was informative and full of useful advice about finding a university place.

He always had time to help others.

I never met him but I miss him.

What a wonderful thing, to be remembered and missed by people who didn't even meet him. That is surely something special.

God bless Snoops. It was indeed a pleasure.

I had no direct interaction with him, but feel like I have lost a friend.

I am with Miss D on this one. What a lovely thing for the children to have.  We could explain to THW on Yahoo answers just so that we got it right like.

Seriously serious mode I really do think that it would be a lovely thing.

I didn't get on with my father particularly well, what with him being a cantankerous grumpy bugger but I have kept a lovely letter that he wrote to me after we arranged a surprise party for his 60th birthday at which he had reduced me to tears. Still get that letter out every so often and read it despite the fact that 20 + years have passed.

Quite so Miss C.  When I was young and living away from home I used to get letters from my Dad which described what was going on in the village.  One included a description of a horse that was dead in the field next to my Gran's house which was all bloated.   lol:

I've struck the Mother lode!  cloud9:

Quote from: Snoopy
Well I would offer to take you myself ..... but Mrs Snoopy can be very ...er..... Snoopy about where I am and who with ~ if you know what I mean After all what could I possibly get up to with a Bar Wench, in France, on our own, for a weekend? I mean ... she’d get some veal at the end of it. eyes:"
"Mrs goes to college Tues afternoons and eves.... thus I have the puppies to look after.
1 lumpy, hormone ridden, permanently PMT’d teenage female (13 yo) brings herself home via the school bus. Clumps into house at about 3.40 and demands food. Two boys (8 & 6) attend an “After School Club” to play on computers etc. Both Lumpen teenager and 8 yo also attend leisure centre 4 miles away to play Badminton from 5 til 7. So I have to get LT into the car by 4.35 to pick up boys and drive to Rhyl. At 4.35 she is standing at top of stairs screaming that her mother (35 miles away at college) has “SOOOOOOOOO LET ME DOWN ~ SHE HASN’T IRONED THE TROUSERS I WANTED TO WEAR”
Coolly I reply that perhaps she could manage with one of three pairs of jeans or one of two pairs of joggers or even one of six pairs of shorts I know I have bought her in the last three months.....
“NOOOOOOOOOOOO”
OK says me go in yer f*cking knickers but get yer arse into the car.
Disgruntled LT sees a basket of ironing, all pressed and folded sitting on the landing. “They may be in here” and starts dragging freshly pressed clothing out by the handful. She finds the trousers she is seeking and puts them on. Gets into car at 4.45 and we collect boys. I drive like a B out of H to Rhyl part with £6 in fees for the Badminton Club session and return home with 6yo who wants his tea. Cook Pizza (Frozen) and chips for him.
Find that there is no tomato ketchup for him .... who need tk on pizza? .......... Him Angry9:
He is now eating tea. SWMBO has rung to say she will not be in until 8 and would I mind cooking tonight as she is SOOOOOOOOOO tired. I have now picked up all the ironing and refolded it.
6yo has now eaten the pizza and chips, drunk a glass of lemonade and wants his “pudding” Hand him a Tesco low fat yogurt and a tea spoon with warnings regarding spillage of same on living room carpet as he is also watching TV. Remind him that we have still to go back to Rhyl to collect the other two. Fill rice cooker with Basmati and peel, slice and fry large onion :’(  Dice cold chicken left from yesterday’s lunch ... throw all this plus a jar of Pataks into a saucepan and place on low heat.
Now all I have to do is press send on this, load smallest puppy into car, drive to Rhyl, prise 13yo off of whichever male member of the Junior Badminton Club she is attached to, collect disgusted at his sister 8yo from the canteen where he will be sipping expensive water from a bottle. Pay for his water ... drive home advising 13yo old of the dangers of gum disease and other nasties associated with leeching her mouth onto the tongue of greater spotted youth. Listen to 8yo telling me how she doesn’t ever want to play Badminton but only goes for the boys. Reassure him that one day it will make sense to him.
Arrive home about 7.30 to find SWMBO has got there already and has gone off the idea (HER idea) of curry and not hungry because she ate at college. 8yo will tell his mother about greater spotted youth and she will have a row with lumpen teenager. 8yo will tell me he doesn’t like curry this week and demand beans on toast.  Banghead I will give him beans on toast and eat a lot of curry, on my own, because Lumpen Teenager will have been sent to bed by her mother.
This is all predictable because it happens every sodding Tuesday.

OK says me go in yer f*cking knickers but get yer arse into the car.

"Just back from a very pleasant evening spent at Prestatyn Cricket Club where I sat on the pavilion veranda sipping a pint, smoking a ciggy and watching the coaches putting my two lads and many other boys through their weekly training session. The sun shone, it was pleasantly warm, even with the breeze coming off the sea (only a hundred yards behind me). Minimus selected to stand behind the stumps on the 11th when the under 11s play St Asaph. Minor showing off his David Gower like grace with bat in hand.
So two tired but happy boys, a good old chin-wag with the other fathers about cricketers we have seen (and known) through the years, a couple of pints of best bitter and a stop at the chippy on the way home to feed the hungry little b*ggers.
Can life get any better? I doubt it.  cloud

Is the 'pot' going towards the books or to the BHF or both.

It matters not to me as having made a donation to you I made an equal donation to the BHF.  Because of my heart problem the BHF is the one charity that I already donate regularly to them.

Any leftover can go to the BHF as requested.  Thumbs:

There's a line I heard once about dying 3 times.  Once when your heart stops, once again at your funeral and once again when you're forgotten.  We may have forgotten the day but I don't think we forgot Snoopy.  The bugger is about to win Calamity Football for a start.

I asked her a question about her job recently. SHe replied thusly:

Good morning, Nick
This is more than interesting.  We have been "reorganised" in the past two years - this has involved a pass the parcel type approach with subjects moving from faculty to faculty, staff moving from floor to floor and room to room and management being obliged to apply for their own job in competition with both their immediate line managers and those for whom their have managerial responsibilities as some managerial positions have been "merged".  The inevitable result is that staff at all levels are demotivated and confused.  Generally we all stumble from one situation to the other in a reactive sort of way with plans and systems changing from week to week and from department to department.  We succeeded in being awarded a level 3 by Ofsted in the autumn so I dare say that some jobs will be reorganised and "new" strategies implemented.  There is much holding of heads in hands and blaming of Ofsted of course.  Individually and collectively, we suffer from a collection of psychopathologies generally along the anxiety disorder and/or depressive disorder spectrum and many say that they are actively seeking employment elsewhere.  I am fascinated to note however, that not enough people have left the college for my name to come to the top of the waiting list for a carpark permit - currently this list is 5 years long.  So why do they leave and why do they not leave?  Well, this week's leaver from our "team" room was one of the lucky ones who managed to secure someone else's job last academic year.  The pressure on her to do her own job plus the other is considerable and the member of staff who did not get the job still sits opposite her in her new capacity as lecturer (full time and can you stay late to do some revision sessions please? And can you help your colleague who has had no training for your old job yet).  You might be forgiven for thinking that the unlucky loser would now be promoted back into her former position of curriculum leader, but no - these duties will be absorbed into the Head of Department's remit.  Guess who is also scanning TES jobs in her lunch break?

So why are we still there?  Apart from the fact that I've only just come and so am not even confirmed in the job yet - and I'm told probably won't be because they generally don't get round to it - I'm not actually looking to move.  For one thing, there is the age old principle beloved of a previous employer - give them extra shifts and they will be too tired to look elsewhere.  I have 32.5 contact hours and have inherited a course with no resources so spend weekends working too, albeit from the comfort of home and the inspiration of a grinning photo on the desk.  Then there are the coping strategies.  Firstly, the fortnightly meeting referred to by management as Student progress meetings.  These are used to let off steam: let's get together at the end of the week and bitch about the students who we ought to be supporting through their issues but don't.  Secondly, we moan about the lack of working technology.  Particularly the photocopiers and the intranet, Moodle etc.  Then there are other trivia, such as room changes, fire drills and lack of temperature control in the building making it too hot in some areas but arctic in others.  To suggest that leaving your job simply because of lack of photocopier or too hot a classroom looks juvenile and petty so we use that sentiment to cover the greater problems.  Then, of course, there are the anxious little upturned faces, some with terrible home lives and some with huge ambitions for the future.  How could I walk away from them?  I have 170 children as well as my own 3 to think about here.  Put it all together and you have inertia - reluctance to move - because it won't be any different anywhere else and unless some kids get a decent education who will be able to look after us when we get old... or as one of my brighter A2 students said recently, "We'll be in charge when you're in need of age related care.  Christ, your generation is screwed!"

Have a nice day
Alison x

If we cannot take the children with us we don’t go. That is not virtuous and we do not see it as a burden .... It goes with the territory, it is the price we accepted we would pay for the gift of having children.
Yes I do feel very strongly that some people do not deserve that gift and this couple are just such people.
