As you can see, UK duty is nearly £2 a bottle (£1.90 now, rising to £2 in the next Budget) and theres 20% VAT on the duty and the wine. UK wine retailers whether supermarkets, merchants, websites or shops have to add the dreaded £1.90 duty to the cost of the bottle before adding their margin and VAT. By contrast, there is no duty in Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Portugal and many other EU countries. In France, its 3p.

The thing that struck me most was the disgusting state of the roads - full of fecking pot holes...
Yet they've obviously spent a millionteen Pounds on white paint, speed restrictions, signs that light up and say you are going too fast for the corner (I'll decide what is too fast), etc.
If they spend half of the money that is wasted on restrictions and nannying on repairing the roads they'd be a lot better off...

Some of it has fish in it, some has finely ground up dirt and we all know Greek wine has added toilet cleaner in it to give than pine fragrance.
As a general rule with wine never look at the ingredients just drink it

The explanation lies in the mealy-mouthed declaration of the Chancellor of the Exchequer each Budget day when he announces, usually in a rather self-satisfied way, that for taxes/duties on alcohol there will be 'no change'. What he means is not that there will be no change to duty rates but that there will be no changes to the measures for a duty escalator brought in in 2008 whereby wine duty rises automatically by inflation plus 2%. So, every year, duties on wines and spirits rise inexorably, by 50% since 2008, as set out years ago.
