Title: Coffee Disappointment
Post by: Snoopy on April 09, 2012, 12:05:01 PM
Why does coffee never taste as good as it smells?

Costa Coffee shops, Starbucks, At home, the smell of fresh coffee arouses the old tastebuds but as soon as I taste it  sick2:

In Holland every cup I drink tastes as good as it smells but in the UK no chance. Whether it has been shat by a wild cat or not it just doesn't measure up.

On a related note: Tea can be variable according to where you make it. PG Tips works well in Wales but in Lincolnshire Yorkshire tea tastes better. Best cuppa for my money is the one you get in McDonalds but their coffee is always shite.

As someone that drinks neither I find it a total nightmare making these drinks for people .

Tea has a variety of tripping hazards such as not getting the right colour chart, milk in first or not etc   noooo:

Coffee - bloody nightmare, mellow or strong. Filter , instant or cafetiere  noooo: Columbian, Brazilian , Blue Mountain etc

Why does coffee never taste as good as it smells?

It does in my kitchen  angel1   Freshly ground beans (usually Central American) in a cafetiere, mid to high roast and a good quantity per cup  ;D

Coffee out is usually disappointing except Café Nero which does a decent cappuccino, a bit like comfort food.

Starbucks have now started doing decent strength coffee so I've been in there a couple of times recently. The water quality certainly makes a difference as the same drink ordered here and back in Ipswich has a noticeably different taste.  Plus if you are making proper coffee at home you will use blends and roasts that you know you like. (for me Guatamalan Antigua, Hawaiian Kona, or Brazillian Yellow Bourbon - civet is too bloody expensive).

One other thing I've noticed about Starbucks lately is that they have started asking for your name when you go in, this just means when I'm in a queue and they ask the guy in front I have an overwhelming urge to shout "Don't tell him Pike".  redface:

Carte Noire I prefer, however I grew up watching my Grandmother measure 4 dessert spoonfuls of Lyons Brazillian Ground Coffee into an enamel coffee pot which stood for 4 minutes on the side of the Rayburn.   Smelled wonderful and tasted as good.  angel1

I think the only thing that stopped me in Starbucks was that the queue and staff didn't look older than 20 so explaining it afterwards would have wasted the moment.

Guatemalan agricultural workers earn around £2.00 a day.  On a coffee farm I've been to they sold bags of coffee beans to the tourist market for around 30 Quetzals ... that's about the price you'd pay, guess where? Sainsbury's, which amounts to around the daily wage of a farm worker. The one's who are benefitting are the farm owners; I imagine little of Fairtrade's alleged 10% trickles down to the workers. That said they've probably got continuing employment.  shrugs:

There were some other things on the site that I may be tempted by, the naga infused licorice gummy bears may be just the thing to deal with a cockwomble who has been annoying me of late...  eveilgrin:

If you ever see them, get a tin of Penguin mints.  Loaded with caffeine they keep you awake but you don't have to find a loo.  Great for long journeys and boring meetings
