Why does this sort of thing always happen the day after I sign off the permission form for one of mine to go on a school trip?

 For any parent or sibling that endures an experience like this it is probably one of the worst things imaginable. Sadly it's an event that's likely to taint or colour the rest of their lives. Nothing can change it but hopefully the support and care offered these days can help the survivors manage the trauma better than it did in years gone by ~ 1955 in my case.
